One answer in each row loses a letter to go to the right hand column and extra letters in all down clues to be removed. These spell three names and then an AIRCON needs to be found and his repetitive activity also highlighted. Sounds intriguing. Also one cell contains two letters
The down clues revealed three names SEDGWICK, WELINSKI and DICKES. I needed to google to connect them to the film “The Great Escape”. All air crew in a prison camp hence Air Cons.
The letters removed from the across answers yielded ARCHIBAD IVES a further member of the RAF.
Who was hiding in the grid Steve McQueen the Cooler King – VIRGIL HILTS holding his baseball MITT lopping his ball at the wall in the Cooler. My basic artistry shows this badly below going through the o’s in the grid. The double letter being the last cell of 1dn allowing MITT to be revealed, where the baseball is caught.
Many thanks Ifor – loved the film as a child and thanks for a serious workout this week.

I always look forward to Ifor’s puzzles, and this one did not disappoint. Quite a remarkable grid. Sometimes his puzzles don’t like me, but I got there in the end on this one and am now set on seeing the film. Thanks to him and twencelas. I remember entering Virgil at 26D without fully understanding why. But now I see ‘vigil’ refers to ‘period on watch’ and not just ‘watch.’ Some clues were tough for me but in hindsight all made sense. I was convinced I had made an error because HILTS would have appeared on the diagonal if not for DITT. But then I saw the name with a (knee) bend and it all began to make some sense.
There’s a setter’s blog of this crossword here http://bigdave44.com/2023/03/23/ev1581-setters-blog/#more-167502
Seriously hard work, and I’ll admit to needing a couple of BigDave’s clues for the first time to get me over the line.
I thought a couple more hints in the preamble might have been nice, particularly that the final drawing was using the same letter 7 times.
A beautiful end product though!
I’m a bit late commenting, but I *loved* this one.
