  1. I am so sorry to hear of this. A big character, and a big influence in popularising crossword puzzles across the board, I met Dave several times at the various crossword meets, and enjoyed his company immensely. RIP indeed, and I do hope that the Big Dave site can be supported, in his memory, for those who have sampled, or have yet to sample, the joys of that excellent website.

  2. I have left my personal recollection of Dave on his website and won’t repeat myself here, but just reiterate my sadness at the news.

  3. I cut my teeth in crossword land on his site and had several email conversations with him. He was always fun and pleasant to converse with.
Very sorry to hear the news. RIP.

  4. Extremely sad news. I met Dave at several gatherings, and the ‘Big’ part of his name was appropriate in so many ways. A huge character blessed with warmth, humour, humility and wide-ranging knowledge. An all-round lovely man who made a great contribution to the wider crossword ‘family’ and, as Paul B#1 says, here’s hoping that Big Dave’s site can be supported and maintained for others to savour. My condolences to his family and closest friends. RIP Big Dave.

  5. Very sad news. Didn’t know Dave but always have admiration for someone generously putting in the time and effort to run a free and brilliant website for something they are passionate about. Hope his family and friends know how much crossword fans love the site.

  6. I lost my friend, philosopher and guide in the crossword world forever. I will forever remain indebted to him from whom I learnt so much through his valuable explanations in his emails to me which I cherish so much and for making me a blogger of the world’s biggest crossword blog. I pray to the Almighty for the eternal rest and peace of Big Dave and for bestowing upon him the nice place in Heaven where he could be with Mrs Big Dave who passed way in March this year.

  7. What a sad loss, used to communicate with him via email and he gave me invaluable help. RIP.

  8. Very sorry to hear this – condolences to Dave’s family and friends.

His crossword site is a great legacy.

  9. I am sad to hear this, it was such a relief to find the site, without it I would have found difficult to make significant headway and continue a family tradition doing the DT crossword. I hope there will be a DT obituary.

  10. Sad news. I’ll treasure the inter-actions I had with Dave.
Deepest condolences to his loved ones.
    RIP Dave Morton.

  11. So sorry to hear of the loss of BD. He was never anything but helpful and encouraging to me as he was to so many others. He will leave a huge empty space.

  12. I’m another graduate of the NTSPP, with BD being highly instrumental in putting a word in for me and I’d guess several others. So I owe him an enormous amount.

50s rock’n’roll was a passion of his and we had several amusing conversations on the validity of modern recreations. And, of course, interesting clues and devices and why neither of us liked a certain setter’s cluing very much.

A terrible loss to us all, who should go into whatever Cruciverbal Hall of Fame nobody has yet set up.

    RIP.
