  1. Thanks, Scchua and Filbert. Definitely meant to be a proper noun, IMHO!

I think INN SIGN is &lit: “illustration on the outside” giving IN rather than “with”.

  2. Particularly liked Corner Shop, Statin, and Inn Sign which I agree, is &lit. Also agree about the proper noun. Maybe it’s an acronym. Foolish Lunatic About (in) The United States. Thanks Scchua and Filbert.

  3. Parsed INN SIGN as others. For a while, we had ‘Finacial Times’ as a header spelling error, now we have ‘Inependent’ 😉

  4. Plenty to like here, as always. I saw no issue with FLATUS and not sure why it needs to be a proper noun. I am probably just being dim but it seems to me there is a straight nounal definition in the clue and a nounal solution. INN SIGN is lovely and I also had big ticks for CRISPY, NOON, CAERPHILLY, PERFORATE, ANTICIPATE, YEOMEN and SOCHI.

    Thanks Filbert & scchua

  5. At 17A, I’ve always known the chicken as ‘buff Orpington’, from its colour, but online references mostly omit buff, so that’s alright then. Thanks Filbert and Scchua.

  6. 20a FLATUS – Very surprised to find trump as fart can only be a verb according to oed.com.
JonathOn Green’s Dictionary of Slang allows it as a noun (as does Wiktionary):
trump n.1 [trump v.] an act of breaking wind audibly; occas. also a similar sound emitted from the vagina during intercourse.’, with citations from 1709 to 1837. …

  7. … and the derived adjective (1999) as trump adj. (US black) rich and successful, with overtones of flashiness.’
1999 [UK] Observer 5 Sept. 25: Donald Trump recently boasted […] ‘It was Puffy who told me there are four major rap songs that use the word “Trump” in the sense of “very Trump”.’.

  8. This puzzle is “a Goldilocks” for me.
    All the ingredients, just right.

Nice to see HAPPY as the little chap from “Snow White”, and not “unsad”. On which I will leave the rest unsaid.

A lovely crossword, with a lot to enjoy.
INN SIGN & CORNER SHOP are elegantly clued.
I like to think that Filbert was thinking FLOTUS when deciding on FLATUS.
A new one on me, but the clue was clearly put together.

Ta, equally, to scchua & Filbert

  9. I was determined to follow advice given by Roz and others today, so I did this in a number of 20 minute bursts in between picking apples and turning compost. Eventually it all dawned on me, but CRISPY. A real pleasure to solve.

  10. Not sure what the problem is with Trump. But that’s probably too big a question for here.
With a small t, Chambers has trump (n) a blast, an act of breaking wind
and flatus (n) a puff of wind or blast, a breath, or gas
    Nice corner shop
