Azed lunch

Solvers of The Observer’s Azed crossword, both regular and occasional, are invited to a special lunch to celebrate puzzle No. 2,750 at Wolfson College, Oxford on Saturday 3rd May, followed by afternoon tea at Azed’s Oxford home.  For full details please email heald (dot) richard (at) gmail.com.

  1. These lunches, although by no means cheap, are not just an opportunity to meet other solvers. There is usually a distinguished guest speaker and the invitation to Azed’s home for tea is exceptionally generous.

  2. Hi Bridgesong. Yes, these events are unfortunately a little on the expensive side, rendered even more so this year because of a sharp hike in the college’s catering costs post-COVID and a substantially reduced monetary contribution from The Observer owing to its uncertain future. However, we would encourage as many Azed solvers as possible to join us for what could well be the last time an event of this magnitude is staged. We can guarantee you good food and drink, good company and more than one distinguished guest speaker, plus a unique chance to meet Azed on his home turf (literally) at the tea party in his beautiful garden afterwards. The two previous garden parties we had in 2015 and 2022 were blessed with glorious weather – and very distinguished surprise guests in Sir Roger Bannister and Prof Sir Andrew Wiles (Azed’s next-door neighbour!) – so fingers crossed for more of the same this time.
