Inquisitor Review of the Year 2023-4: The Results
Menu Choice
And there we have it. In the end you opted for the sausage dish in preference to the cheese and the whale-meat courses. Many congratulations to eXternal, winner of both the unofficial title of Best Title of the Year for “Sausage Competition” and the official title of Inquisitor Puzzle of the Year, proving – in his own words – that the puzzle was a Banger and not Baloney. Commiserations to Charybdis, “running” a close second with his melted cheeses, and to Serpent in third with an animal well beyond resus-cetacean.
Moving on quickly, it was gratifying that a record 40 out of last year’s 52 puzzles received at least half a point from the 26 solvers who recorded a valid vote. It was good to see three of our newer or lesser-spotted setters sharing fourth place. There were only nine “3” votes (seven for the top two puzzles); unusually, only two each of the high-difficulty and low-difficulty puzzles made the cut. Six of you wrote to apologise for not voting, because the choice was too difficult (again, that’s good, I think).
Here are the top 25.

Thanks John and congratulations to all the setters!
John
Thanks from me also.
It was indeed hard to choose some puzzles over others, and that is, in a way, a ‘good’ thing, as you implied. The general standard of these puzzles is commendably high, and we solvers enjoy the benefit of all the testing and editing as well as the setting that goes into them.
