Independent No. 12,207 by Maize

A grid by Maize to solve today.

I’m possibly reaching the point in my life when the memory begins to fail, or I’ve done enough 15×15 posts that I’m losing track, but I had to check whether I’d done a Maize grid before: turns out, not.

Somewhat thorny in places, I couldn’t quite seem to get on Maize’s wavelength at times. Nonetheless, with head sufficiently scratched I got them all parsed (I think).

27d might have the most crossword directions in 40 characters ever!

Thank you, Maize for the grid. Definitions are underlined

    ETA
    Greek hotel?=Greek H (capital eta)
The blogger must have interpreted the same way, I think.

    SLENDER
    his role=Lending or LENDER?

    TOP
    Took it as a CD.

    Thanks Leedsclimber and Maize.

  2. Jayjay

I always struggle with Maize, but slightly made up for it by getting the theme. Thanks to Maize and to Leedsclimber for the much-needed blog!

  3. Hovis

Took TOP as antonym of 6a.
    18a MAR not MARI
    21a ROCC not ROC.
RUM triple definition but don’t know the Scottish Isle.
Made slow but enjoyable progress but came a cropper in NE. Should have seen BLEMISH which would then probably have gotten me home and dry.
Didn’t care for the anagram indicator in 26a. To me it suggest splitting STREAM into 2 and rejoining (in a different order).

  4. DP

Re 7d TOP, 6a is BOTTOM
Thanks for the blog – a couple I was unable to parse.
And thanks for an entertaining puzzle. Great anagram for DRAMATIS PERSONAE!

TOP is a nice clue. I think both senses alluded to in the blog work as well as it being a CD (and the link to 6a which I’ve just seen in the comment #4). Brilliant. I sort of agree with ‘thorny’ although I think that’s on me rather than the setter, because I didn’t recognise the def for MASTER, or TO US as ‘journey north’ in 2d, or the clever trick with ‘bogeying’ in 15d until I read the blog. My top clue is REMOVER for the enigmatic surface reading. An excellent puzzle from Maize. Thanks to him and to LC for a great blog.

  6. KVa

    TOP
    Thanks Hovis and DP.
    I hadn’t paid attention to ‘a 6’.
    MASTER
    Agree with Hovis@3.

  7. DuncT

    Jayjay@2 mentions a theme. Is it 1/32?
    Thanks to Maize and Leedsclimber

  8. grantinfreo

Forgot H = eta despite keeping a printout of the Greek alphabet handy. First time doing a Maize puzzle, pretty smooth, thanks to them and Leedsclimber.

  9. PostMark

duncan @7: I think so. BOTTOM, TOUCHSTONE, COBWEB, SLENDER, HAMLET, STARVELING are all named Shakespearean characters. The Prince of MOROCCO makes an appearance and there is almost certainly a POET, PRINCESS, MASTER, SERGEANT, PAGE and HERALD somewhere, I’d guess. MARINA makes an appearance in Pericles, Prince of Tyre which may or may not be by Shakespeare.

    Thanks both
