Wednesday’s puzzle has been provided by Lark, a compiler whose work I am not that familiar with. I certainly enjoyed becoming a bit more familiar with it today.
I found this to be quite a challenging puzzle overall. Although difficulty is a relative concept, for me at least, there were quite a few write-ins to get me off to a good start, but I slowed down considerably towards the end, my last-ones-in being 16 and 17. I wondered if the reference in 17 to “sex” without any link to Rome or Latin was actually fair – perhaps this trick has been used before?
As for my preferred clues, I liked 7, 10, 18 and 30, all for smoothness of surface; 27, for sheer flair, incorporating so many soft drink references; and 24, for sauciness.
After today’s puzzle, I am certainly looking forward to my next brush with Lark.

Thanks both. I agree this was very approachable for the vast majority, but not all. Ultimately, I needed help with IDLERS not knowing the ‘id’ and VITIATION itself an unknown with a fairly complex construction. Went momentarily awry with SCHEMAS as I thought the plural was schemata and had preferred schemes wherein the ME was a ‘master of engineering’.
16D was one of my last ones in too. I could see IDLERS but thought that
‘inactive part of psyche’ was ID and then couldn’t work out how the rest might go. Was wrong about ID as well. It’s unconscious but apparently quite active and will be activated by completing a crossword without help. Liked SHIRLEY TEMPLE and ACCOLADE. PUTSCH at 1ac was the first one in. Always a good start. Thanks RR and Lark
Had to look up ARBROATH and put in IDLERY instead of IDLERS. I don’t normally do Independent, and when I do, I’m usually defeated but this time it was Ok. Liked PERRY (for the infuriating brevity), VITIATION, CROQUETTE. Thanks Lark and RatkojaRiku!
PERRY was very good, as was PUTSCH. Enjoyed the whole thing, including discovering the previously nho TIERCEL (where’s Pierre when you need an obligatory bird link?) Thanks to Lark and Ratkojariku
Really enjoyed this one, and a rare case of spotting the theme helped, once I recognised a few names! Thanks to Lark for the puzzle and RatkojaRaju for the blog.
Some lovely clues, I liked PERRY, and the definition for ENEMA.
Lark is ascending in my estimations 🙂
Unlike Nothingathome@5, I only noticed the theme after I had finished and was wondering why it wasn’t Eccles on Wednesday. The theme is the TV series COMMUNITY and the grid contains one name of each of the seven original members of the study group: Jeff WINGER, Britta PERRY, Abed NADIR, SHIRLEY Bennett, Annie EDISON, TROY Barnes and PIERCE Hawthorne.
