I’ve just set the dates for my classes in 2026. I’m looking forward to a stimulating season, with each class consisting of a small group of people representing a range of experience, from self-confessed dabblers to those who are starting to have their work published, along with perhaps a few advanced solvers who’ll be able to enhance their enjoyment of crosswords by seeing how a setter’s mind works.
We’ll look at clue-writing (with the emphasis on the things that make the difference between good and mediocre puzzles), grid filling and the basics of theme development and getting published. You’ll receive a copy of the other participants’ work before the class, so that you’ll have a chance to think like an editor and to see your own work through other people’s eyes. Each class includes eight hours of tuition over two sessions, and you’ll receive notes and personal guidance with suggestions for further work and over 250 pages of course materials.
I hope you’ll join us and learn a lot about compiling from me and from each other – or, if you have a loved one who’d enjoy developing their inner fiendishness, a place on one of my classes makes a much-appreciated gift!
Spring class Saturday 14 and 21 March 2026
2pm to 6pm UK time
Autumn class Saturday 7 and 14 November 2026
2pm to 6pm UK time
Venue Online
Cost £160
There’ll also be an advanced session on Saturday 18 July 2026 for previous attendees, covering themes, professional development and alternative software in more detail.
