Independent 12,288 by Eccles

It’s Wednesday, it’s Eccles!

Another great puzzle from our Wednesday setter – smooth surfaces and well-crafted clues.

We had to check the references in a few answers – for 1ac, 4ac, 12ac, 24ac and 8d, but they were all eminently gettable from the wordplay. Clue of the day is definitely 17ac!

Eccles has the knack of allowing you to feel clever when you work out a new word like PERICOPE or a fact like OBERON being a heavenly body. I did think the TIME SIGNAL was the hooter at the end of a Rugby League match.

  2. Xmac

Enjoyed much, lots of new words for me but did remember that Rugby was the location for the time signal. Chosen for its central location, I think. Did wonder if ‘ward’ as in ‘ward off’ might mean forcibly strike (and DRAW = TIE) but too big a stretch. Agree that EGOMANIAC stands out. Nicely done.
    Thanks both

    Lovely puzzle from Eccles again.
The Redknapp clue was a gem.
The fact that the time signal was broadcast from Rugby a little obscure and the Duffy song only achieved by Google search rather than spending ages fiddling with Pete Tong spins!
    Overall great great fun.
    Thanks all.

On another day Pete Tong could have been the anagrind (as in the rhyming slang for wrong), which made me wonder if it had been done before.
