Turning a comment from Don Manley on a certain other blog into a posting, there’s an auction in progress for a spare ticket for the Azed lunch in Oxford this Saturday – see this announcement for details. The auction closes at 9 a.m. BST tomorrow (Tuesday).
I can’t make this one, but went to the Azed 1000 lunch and remember it as a good chance to meet other crossword enthusiasts (including many well-known setters) in a rather more formal setting than the pub gatherings I’ve organised. My clearest memories are sitting opposite the unfortunate setter whose Listener puzzle commemorating the anniversary was ruined because they printed the solution next to the puzzle, and a crisp description of crossword setting from Harold Massingham (Mass) – “realisation of ideas, lad”.
