    I’m not good with faces, but I did recognise Eileen from previous events’ photos.

    I suggest viewing it as a presentation – the images are much larger and clearer.

  3. As the main entry for the S&B is no longer at the top of the notices, I’ll make my general comment here. Many thanks to K’s D and Eileen for organizing the event which was most enjoyable and where it was great to meet so many with an interest in the puzzles. The whole day was very well organized, with the food excellent and very modestly priced. Thanks again to both of you.

    Massive thanks to K’s Dad for organising the event so well (and for giving me the excuse to talk about cricket in the sort of detail that usually gets me a clip round the ear; and we’ve finally nailed the 11th way of getting out). I hope you’ve had a good rest today after all your hard work.

    Thanks to everyone for the wonderful company. It was great fun, and I can’t wait for the next time 🙂

  9. Sorry to have missed it. My alternative meeting at the Brunswick went on rather longer than expected; I did have a quick look around when we finished but didn’t recognise anyone, though looking at the photos it seems some of you were still there. Oh well, must try not to miss the next one.

  13. stumped@8 – many thanks for the links, which I hadn’t come across. As for the 11th way, it’s “Retired (out)”, as opposed to “Retired (hurt)”, and although it only counts as a dismissal for the purpose of calculating a batting average, a dismissal it still is. As of course are you 🙂

For the benefit of stumped, I should perhaps just say that I will stick to my guns and say that there are only ten ways to be dismissed in cricket; but following our post-prandial discussion, I will acknowledge that you are right in saying that there are eleven ways of getting out …

    Arachne & Kathryn’s Dad -Sounds like you had an interesting discussion, one I’d like to join at some future occasion. Retired (Out) is voluntary and isn’t a ‘dismissal’ in the usual sense of the word, even though it counts ‘out’ for Batting Average. Usually it happens in ‘friendlies’ though here’s an International example –

  20. Apologies ditto, and we mustn’t hijack the thread, but just to say thanks to stumped @19 for the fascinating link – two ret’d outs in one international innings must be pretty much unheard of! S’pose the argument in the end is semantic. There are 10 ways of being dismissed, but 11 ways of being out. As for a cricket-themed puzzle, stumped, I’d absolutely love to do one, but suspect it might not win me too many friends 🙁 We’ll see…

    Thanks, Jane for the photos (is Sil seeing the same ones as me?). I haven’t looked at Dave’s yet but rather dread looking because I know the camera was aimed at me on one occasion and my face cracks lenses.

    What a great time I had and what a splendid idea to have a buffet with round tables and space to roam and get to know people. Thanks, Peter, for organising it.

    Thank you also to the clever folk who gave us crosswords. I’ve completed Sil’s (Dalibor) and hope to send comments to him. Trailman’s is almost complete with Gervase’s to follow.

    For those who joined in the discussion about train prices way back, my train fare did come down and I’m preparing a paper about the best time to book advance tickets. 🙂

  25. I can say it was worth all of about 7000 miles and 8 hour time difference thanks to yourself and others, nmsindy. It was serendipitous that I could be there this first time and I hope there’ll be more.

  26. scchua @25 That’s quite a trek. I, too, hope there’ll be more such events. My 3000 miles and 5 hour time difference pale in comparison.

    Looking at the photos I have one question, who is “dormiN”?

    Arachne @20, one final off-topic point, Guardian’s sports section does over-by-over coverage when England’s playing. It’s an interactive thing, much of the time the thread veers off into uncharted territory. Some people write in with requests for financial support of various charitable sporting endeavours. I’m sure the readers will respond just as generously to you.

    I sorry I missed out on the chance to speak to fellow cricket lovers. I have been a supporter of Hampshire CCC for over 35 years.
