Looks like you all enjoyed it.
I’m not good with faces, but I did recognise Eileen from previous events’ photos.
I suggest viewing it as a presentation – the images are much larger and clearer.
You can view it as a presentation, or right-click on individual photos to see them more clearly (go for Original view), and to download them as you wish.
As the main entry for the S&B is no longer at the top of the notices, I’ll make my general comment here. Many thanks to K’s D and Eileen for organizing the event which was most enjoyable and where it was great to meet so many with an interest in the puzzles. The whole day was very well organized, with the food excellent and very modestly priced. Thanks again to both of you.
Many thanks, jetdoc – hope you’ll soon be better!
Great to see you again, nms – but, please, no more thanks to me. The organisation was entirely Peter’s, so huge thanks to him and everyone who came. Here’s to the next time!
Thanks for the pics, jetdoc, and I hope you’re feeling better today.
Massive thanks to K’s Dad for organising the event so well (and for giving me the excuse to talk about cricket in the sort of detail that usually gets me a clip round the ear; and we’ve finally nailed the 11th way of getting out). I hope you’ve had a good rest today after all your hard work.
Thanks to everyone for the wonderful company. It was great fun, and I can’t wait for the next time π
Love and hugs, Arachne x
All credits to Peter (of whom I’ve heard he’s also Pierre nowadays – is he?).
And, Jane, I think Photo #7 is a real stunner!
Moreover, I will make use of Photo #12 to tell my Cambridge Hairdressing Alex that she did a good job ….
Looking forward to the next occasion.
@Sil re Pierre, honestly if K’s D wants anonymity when blogging then let him, oops sorry Peter. I wish I’d booked a hotel or later train home now. So when’s the next one?
Seems a lot of fun was had by all. I used to live near Derby, sadly am across the pond now.
Arachne @5, I have to know the 11th way of getting out! If you weren’t aware already, you can follow TV feed of any current International match at http://www.webcric.com and text commentary at http://www.espncricinfo.com.
Sorry to have missed it. My alternative meeting at the Brunswick went on rather longer than expected; I did have a quick look around when we finished but didn’t recognise anyone, though looking at the photos it seems some of you were still there. Oh well, must try not to miss the next one.
Thanks to Kathrynsdad and Eileen for doing a great job. I had a smashing time and met such lovely people. It’s a pity I only got to meet about a third of the people there. Here’s to the next one.
I’d like to add my thanks to Kβs D for the excellent organisation of the event.
I’ve posted my pictures here:
Sloggers & Betters, Derby, 26 November 2011
Iβd like to add my thanks to Kβs D for a great day, and like flashling I wish I had booked a later train home. Thanks to all for making me feel so welcome at my S&B initiation.
stumped@8 – many thanks for the links, which I hadn’t come across. As for the 11th way, it’s “Retired (out)”, as opposed to “Retired (hurt)”, and although it only counts as a dismissal for the purpose of calculating a batting average, a dismissal it still is. As of course are you π
Thanks for the thanks, but it wasn’t that much effort, and I really enjoyed it as well (which is part of the motivation for doing it, of course). Good company, good conversation, good food and good beer. And thanks also for the piccies. Are there any more?
Arachne at no 5, I think we may be straying into ‘Royal We’ territory here. For the benefit of stumped, I should perhaps just say that I will stick to my guns and say that there are only ten ways to be dismissed in cricket; but following our post-prandial discussion, I will acknowledge that you are right in saying that there are eleven ways of getting out …
Sorry to have missed this as the last one was truly brilliant. You all seem to be enjoying the day, which was the whole point. Thanks to Kathryns dad, hopefully I will make the next one.
Many thanks to Peter for organising such an interesting and enjoyable occasion. Looking at the pictures makes me wish I had also ventured to the Brunswick, so must remedy this next time! Special thanks to Arachne, Rufus, Eileen and Orlando for their hospitality.
Sylvia @16 – thank you so much for your company on Saturday, and hope to see you again next time (in the pub afterwards too!)
K’s Dad @14 Hmm, apparently my (or should I say Our) work here is not yet done …
Thanks for the photos, Jetdoc. Very enjoyable day and next time I hope to get to know more of you!
Very many thanks to Eileen for suggesting that I should come along, and to Kathryn’s Dad for organising everything. Thanks also to those who took the trouble to supply us with puzzles!
Won’t book such an early train back next time…
Apologies in advance for straying from the topic.
Arachne & Kathryn’s Dad -Sounds like you had an interesting discussion, one I’d like to join at some future occasion. Retired (Out) is voluntary and isn’t a ‘dismissal’ in the usual sense of the word, even though it counts ‘out’ for Batting Average. Usually it happens in ‘friendlies’ though here’s an International example –

Arachne, A Cricket Themed Puzzle for start of next English Season perhaps?
Apologies ditto, and we mustn’t hijack the thread, but just to say thanks to stumped @19 for the fascinating link – two ret’d outs in one international innings must be pretty much unheard of! S’pose the argument in the end is semantic. There are 10 ways of being dismissed, but 11 ways of being out. As for a cricket-themed puzzle, stumped, I’d absolutely love to do one, but suspect it might not win me too many friends π We’ll see…
Nooooooo, Arachne ! Please, don’t – I can’t do any crosswords with sports in them. π
Thanks, Jane for the photos (is Sil seeing the same ones as me?). I haven’t looked at Dave’s yet but rather dread looking because I know the camera was aimed at me on one occasion and my face cracks lenses.
What a great time I had and what a splendid idea to have a buffet with round tables and space to roam and get to know people. Thanks, Peter, for organising it.
Thank you also to the clever folk who gave us crosswords. I’ve completed Sil’s (Dalibor) and hope to send comments to him. Trailman’s is almost complete with Gervase’s to follow.
For those who joined in the discussion about train prices way back, my train fare did come down and I’m preparing a paper about the best time to book advance tickets. π
I’ve had to chance to look at Dave’s pics now. Thanks, big fella, they’re great.
Thanks to K’sDad for organising such a splendid event. Also special thanks to him and others for the warm welcome to and conversation with this first-timer at an S&B. Thanks too to jetdoc & Big Dave for the pics.
Yes, it was splendid, scchua, and great to see you there having travelled from so far, I think.
I can say it was worth all of about 7000 miles and 8 hour time difference thanks to yourself and others, nmsindy. It was serendipitous that I could be there this first time and I hope there’ll be more.
scchua @25 That’s quite a trek. I, too, hope there’ll be more such events. My 3000 miles and 5 hour time difference pale in comparison.
Looking at the photos I have one question, who is “dormiN”?
Arachne @20, one final off-topic point, Guardian’s sports section does over-by-over coverage when England’s playing. It’s an interactive thing, much of the time the thread veers off into uncharted territory. Some people write in with requests for financial support of various charitable sporting endeavours. I’m sure the readers will respond just as generously to you.
scchua@25 I had no idea you’d come so far and am now kicking myself for not taking the opportunity to chat to you properly. Next time!
stumped@26 Very many thanks for the tip – you’re a star!
Just to say I enjoyed the day in Derby.
I sorry I missed out on the chance to speak to fellow cricket lovers. I have been a supporter of Hampshire CCC for over 35 years.
Next time, Colin. Middlesex is my team.
