Though I found this quick to solve there are still a couple of answers I can’t explain (7 and 10 down).  Any help appreciated.

NOT reversed (taken up) and BRIDGE (card game) – public school and town in Kent on the river Medway.  I can’t figure this out.  ETON is an obvious public school, but why missing E?  UPTON is another possibility, missing UP (not taken), but I can’t find any references to this being a well known public school (Google shows there are dozens of schools called Upton Something-or-other).

    Thanks for the blog. I enjoyed the places this took us to.

    7 down is two definitions (the town and the school) followed by NOT reversed and BRIDGE for card game.

    10 down is nem con (nemo contra) switched around plus a ra (an artist).

  2. Thanks Muffyword. I think I was trying to overcomplicate 7dn. I had not heard of the school but could have guessed. NEM CON was completely new to me, not much of a chance there.

  3. Re 10d, I have no idea where or what Connemara is, but my Irish colleague is adamant it isn’t a peninsula.

  4. Thanks for the blog and comments so far. Much appreciated. The query about Connemara can be easily resolved. My source for the clue was Brewer’s Britain and Ireland in which the entry for “Connemara” begins “A wide and wild peninsula in the west of County Galway ….” . That’s good enough for me!
