Private Eye / Cyclops 503 – Psycho diatribe

Cyclops on usual form with a bundle of profane, scatological and politically cynical clues and answers.

This time the grid was enlivened by a couple of clues where some thespian knowledge was required.
Only one question on the wordplay: In 18D why  specify sixty seconds?

  1. Many thanks, as always, BM. Great puzzle, too – Cyclops really is the master of surfaces!

On MO in 18d – I assume that a moment is conventionally a minute, hence the secs. But I agree that the apparent equivalence of “Just a mo” and “Just a sec” is a bit of a stumbling block…

  2. Historically a ‘mo’ was either a fortieth or a fiftieth of an hour, 72 or 90 seconds. I think the ‘sixty’ is just there for the surface.

By the way beermagnet, you were being asked after on the site that replaced the old Graun talkboards, many of the old crossworders are still there at notthetalk.com

  3. Thanks BM…

For 13a I thought perhaps SCORNER with a belt (of land) = a corner. Though i wasnt happy.

But not sure about SCARPER either. Belt: speed / move quickly. Bolt would have been better?

Though I guess belt gives a better surface read.

    Hmmmm

  4. Last in was 21d with muc nead scratching at?l?n?y. Eventually decided that plenty would fit but why? Who is this David. Googled plenty and David and got answer but never heard of the chap or the play. Now someone can stagger me by saying it was their first in!
