Inquisitor Review 2012-13, part 2: the Results

Groundhog Year

Many thanks to everyone who voted. The fact that around half of the 52 puzzles received at least one vote reflects the diversity and general enjoyment of the puzzles, and the resulting difficulty solvers had in making their choices. That one particular idea conjured the best solving moment of the year from potentially the worst (see here, if you haven’t already) speaks volumes for the brilliance of the idea, and I’m sure Ploy won’t object too much if he joins me (as mere co-conspirators) in congratulating Charybdis (aka Crosophile) on his ground(-hog) breaking conception. Special mentions, too, for the brilliant ideas in the shadow of the Groundhog executed via Turbulent Priests and Ladykillers by Ifor and Eclogue

 Here are the results:

  1. Nimrod: thanks for putting this together. Did you count the votes that you yourself gave in your initial review? (They seem to be included in Ifor‘s score for Post Mortem, but not in Eclogue‘s for Tour de Farce — or has my maths let me down?)

  2. Congratulations to Plench, the idea was brilliant. Thanks for everyone who voted for my puzzle. Being only a newbie to setting, I really didn’t expect to be nominated. I couldn’t vote as I hadn’t solved enough Inquisitors from last year. I usually solve a similar barred grid series. However, I have now added the Inquisitor to my weekly solve and look forward to some great puzzles this year.

  3. It seems a shame that so many are not on the roll-call, as all of the puzzles have, in their own way, been a really high standard.

One of these days, I must get round to having a stab at creating a Spinal Tap-themed puzzle, but if anyone wants to beat me to it, you’ll have my undying loyalty…

  4. Many thanks, Nimrod (aka the EN(igmatist) of plENch). It was great fun working with PL(oy) and yourself and trying to find some way of making the thing work.
I remember smiling to myself when the idea initially occurred to me and I’m delighted others enjoyed it too. But it was very definitely a team effort with essential input coming from each of us.
I hope the disgusteds of Tunbridge Wells eventually forgave us and wish to thank everyone who voted for either puzzle (and indeed my solo effort!).
    Charybdis

  5. Many thanks, Nimrod (aka the EN(igmatist) of plENch). It was great fun working with PL(oy) and yourself and trying to somehow make the thing work both as two stand-alone puzzles and as a pair of course.
I remember smiling to myself when the original vague conception of an apparently recurring puzzle appearing on Groundhog Day occurred to me and I’m glad so many others enjoyed it as well. (And I’ve only this moment realised that we should have come up with yet a third one – ‘Woodchuck Puzzle’, as Ploy realised, is the name given to those 3-D interlocking wooden jigsaw puzzles and I’m sure we could have riffed something on that and begged the Indy on Sunday to somehow find space for it this coming 2nd Feb! Maybe a bit late for that now…).
I should emphasise that though it was my original idea, this was very much a team effort with vital ingredients coming from all three of us throughout.

Thanks of course to everyone who voted for either puzzle (or indeed my solo effort) and I hope the Disgusteds of Tunbridge Wells have now forgiven us our little deception.

  6. Oops, sorry about that! My previous posting didn’t appear and I thought I’d lost it. I’ll shut up now. 🙂

  7. Bingybong: I did a Spinal Tap themed daily cryptic for the Indy last year which was ok . I can send it on if you wish.

  8. Hi Charybdis
Your original comment fell foul of Akismet, the site’s spam filter, and I recovered it a few minutes later. However, duplicate comments are somehow apt.
