Guardian Quiptic 767 Pan

(Please click here for this same blog but with a picture quiz added. Please do NOT post hereinbelow any comment relating to the picture quiz. Thank you.)  I think this was of the right difficulty for a Quiptic, though 12 across is ambiguous until you get the checking letter. Still, no major problem. Thanks to Pan. Definitions are underlined in the clues.

There appear to be some answers/clues which are linked to one another. Thus, Anthony Trollope/Barchester Towers, toga/Pisa/stucco, agate/emerald, chromosome/transmute, and ginseng/South Korean. I don’t think there’s anything more to it. Perhaps it’s just the way a setter’s mind works when selecting entries to fill the grid with.

  1. Thanks Pan and scchua

    My favourites were 19d, 4d, 20d.

I needed help from wikipedia to confirm Barchester Towers and new word for me was TIERCET.

  2. Thanks Pan, largely OK as a Quiptic although you need to know something about literature and music.

Thanks scchua; yes, I put in TERN at first as it is ambiguous. I gather a hair shirt is made with HAIRCLOTH.

I liked the clue for TRANSMUTE.

  3. I enjoyed this puzzle, although maybe it was slightly trickier than some Quiptics. I needed the final checker from ENGINE before I got my LOI, TIERCET, which I hadn’t heard of but was the most obvious arrangement of the anagram fodder.

  4. Thanks, scchua.

That’ll do for me for a Monday morning Quiptic. Nicely clued throughout, with – like others – TIERCET being the only one that I wasn’t familiar with. Convinced myself that it must start with TRE, but no.

My only nanoquibble would be that DNA is part of the chromosome, rather than the other way round; but I suppose that you could say that a chromosome is part of the entirety of your DNA, so I’ll get me coat.

    Bravo, Pan.

  5. Thanks scchua and Pan
Actually I failed on OBSCURED, as I had confidently entered TERN, and it didn’t occur to me that it might not be right. Also I have heard of a “hairshirt”, but not “haircloth” (though I did guess it).
