Beelzebub 1,273

A tough week for me, though I made life difficult for myself by inventing a word for 1 across and writing it in without thinking to even check. Well, all the letters of the anagram were in there.

That made 8 down impossible and I’d have been asking for your help there had I not spotted the mistake whilst blogging. 12 across could use a tiny bit of clarification, though.

*=anagram, []=dropped, <=reversed.

Across
1 ECCALEOBION – (LOBE + COCAINE)*.
12 ROAM – this is a slightly odd one. Both ROM and RAM are types of memory. The clue reads: Whether about Ordinary or Advanced, memory’s to wander. Should it perhaps read Whether without…?
13 APOLLINE – POLL in AÎNÉ.
14 SUPERVENIENCE – (UNEVEN RECIPES)*.
17 UTERI – hidden in [comp]UTER I[nstallation].
18 SAND SOLE – [va]N in (SAD + SOLE). Another name for the lemon sole.
19 MEDAKA – MED + AKA.
20 DUTIED – TIE in DUD.
22 ORCHITIS – HISTORIC*.
24 SESSA – (S + S) in SEA.
28 GLOSSOGRAPHER – (LOSS in GO) + G + RAP + HER.
29 HOLOSTEI – (LOST in HOE) + I.
30 KINE – [ran]KINE. Presumably William John Macquorn Rankine.
31 INCARCERATE – IN-CAR + CERATE. Nicely done.
Down
1 ERST – hidden backwards in [moun]TS RE[eared].
2 COUNTERBLOWB in (COUNTER + LOW).
3 CAPPED – C[l]APPED.
4 LARRIKINSARR in LIKIN[g]S.
5 EAVES – [l]EAVES.
6 OPERA SINGER – a sort of two-way anagram: (SOPRANO I REGRET)* would give you (OPERA SINGER + ROT)*.
7 BONG – BO[w][i]NG.
8 OLEASTER – O[i]L + EASTER.
9 NINE – [me]N IN E[earliest]. I don’t know enough about the history of baseball to know whether this is &lit!
10 INCALESCENTINC + ALE + SCENT.
11 PEEVED – EVE in PED.
15 INDUSIATE – (IDEAS UNIT)*.
16 TRAHISON – HISTOR[i]AN*.
19 MOUGHT – M[anage] + TOUGH, but with the T moved “right down” to the end.
21 ISCHIAIS + CHI[n]A.
23 SERICS + ERIC.
25 HOLIL in HOI.
26 IOTA – (A TO I)<.
27 FREER in FEE.

  1. Thanks for the blog.

I think 12a is fine – whether you put ROM about Advanced or RAM about Ordinary, you get ROAM
