Sloggers & Betters, York 2015? Show of hands, please!

A message from John Henderson …

The possibility of a S&B in York in October along the same lines as the 2014 event was mentioned by a number of people at the recent get-together in Cambridge. I’m more than happy to put this together if there is a consensus, and have checked that the same venue that we used last year is available again. To avoid event clashes, the date would have to be a week earlier than last year’s fixture, so before I go ahead, please could I have a show of hands for Saturday, October 24? Naturally, for those wishing to make a weekend of it, there would be a quizzical Ale Trail on the Friday night, and a “Recovery” session on the Sunday morning at the York Tap…

This weekend is the start of the school half-term. It is the weekend after The Times Crossword Championships in London, and the weekend before the quarterly Listener event, also in London. (Tom Johnson’s Crossword Break in Cornwall this year runs from Sunday November 1 to Wednesday November 4). British Summertime ends the following week.

    My hand’s up, thanks, John!

With heavy heart I have to say sorry, can’t make it, much as I would love to but the calendar is already booked up with a Golden Wedding celebration that weekend. (Gawd, 50 years since I was a bridesmaid). I’m sure a great time will be had by all, if last year’s do is anything to go by.

  10. Brigster

    Another Yes from me

  11. Richard Heald

Count two more people in, John. Well done on getting the same venue.

  12. Sil van den Hoek

    Yes please.

  13. Bertandjoyce

Add us to the list please.

  14. Chris Lancaster

Despite living just up the road, I’m afraid we’ll be on our normal October half-term week in Scotland. Our youngest child should be finishing school in six years’ time, however, so count me in for the gathering in October 2021.

  15. Probably OK, I hope to be there.

  16. Kathryn's Dad

Sounds like a plan, John. Many thanks – I will be there.

  17. Jim T

    Should be OK, John. Thanks.

  18. andy

    Count me in please

  19. George Clements

Include me please, John, with Jennifer as support crew.

    Aye, aye!

Yes from me too. Thank you, John; look forward to it.

  22. Dave Howell

I’m free that weekend & would certainly be interested.

  23. ClaireS

Definitely up for this – along with the quizzical ale trail. Andy too.

  24. It’s a “probable” for me.

  25. Helen Ougham

OK for us – looking forward to it!

  26. Serpent

Sounds good – it’s in the diary!

  27. allan_c

Nothing in the diary as yet for that date so it’s a distinct possibility.

  28. Fairly local for me, so I could certainly make it.

  29. NeilR

    Definitely OK for me

  30. Tom Johnson

I hope to come too. And why don’t you consider coming to Budock Vean for my Crossword Break starting on November 1st? As usual some leading crossworders will be there.

  31. Would love to be there – and also thinking of Budock Vean a week later!

  32. Monk

Oh go on then: close enough to waddle home via a train or two …

  33. Jan

Sadly, it’s too far for me.

  34. Almw3

    I’ll be there!

  35. PeterO

This is a definite conditional: I have been hoping to combine a trip back to the UK with a S&B get-together, so if it’s on, I’ll be there!

  36. Trailman

This will be good for me John.

  37. I might be able to make it

  38. Gervase

And here’s another for the party.

  39. lancastrian bluenose

Might be able to make that: depends on other things falling into place
