Thanks Jason and scchua
Find this setter at the easier end of the FT stable – but with enough grist to make him interesting. I also finished up in the NE corner with SLENDER, CARTRIDGE and SNATCH the last few in.
Found a few of the charades took some thinking through – including CARTRIDGE(cleverly disguised), HEATWAVE (with the pygmies) and WITHERED (always get caught out for a while with that definition of THERE !
AIRMILES was new … and he reference that I found had it split into two words (3,5)
Thanks Jason for an interesting puzzle (that I didn’t quite complete unfortunately) and scchua for the usual high quality blog.
Perhaps 29ac was meant to be parsed as cut ~ less [ interpreting cut as ‘take away’ or ‘make less’ ] and thus cutback being the reversal. If this was indeed the setter’s intent, then the ‘without’ becomes superfluous in the clue.
Cheers
TL
I think 29a works if you look at the clue differently.
Reserve force without cutback in uniform decoration
We will get reserve force (TA) without (by deleting) cut(LESS)back (SSEL) in TA
