  1. Thanks Everyman and flashling, congratulations for your 200th blog here.

An enjoyable puzzle, no problems, just right for the Everyman.

I, too, tried Berlin at 10a before realizing it had to be DUBLIN, and it took a while to see that 1d was not a double definition.
I especially liked GREAT APE, ROLLER COASTER, MONTE CARLO, MARSHMALLOW and GOBY!

  2. Another fun puzzle. I particularly liked APOSTROPHE – nice surface and the first time I’d seen that anagram. I also the surfaces of TWEEZERS, EQUIPMENT and PREHISTORIC.

Thanks, Everyman and flashling (wow, 200!)

  3. Thanks Everyman and flashling, happy 200th anniversary blog.

I really enjoyed this puzzle, although I failed to solve MONTE CARLO.

  4. Blimey, only three blogs? Where is everyone?

Loved this puzzle. Just right. Monte Carlo and Goby were my favourites.

Thanks Everyman and congrats Flashling on your double ton, great effort.

All eyes on the RWC from afar here. Tense times ahead.

  5. Couldn’t for the life of me see 1d! Enjoyed this puzzle, particularly liked bouncer! Good on yer Flashling for your double century.. I think your red roses might cause us some bother in weeks to come

  6. Got stuck on one or two this week though it doesn’t help that we are weary from getting our house ready to market. Didn’t get Monte Carlo nor Dublin, but too tired to puzzle any longer. Liked apostophe amd satin.
Well done Flashlng. Where is everyone this week?

  7. My thesaurus names over 100 fish, but none called Goby. Never heard of a fish called Goby.
I only solved 5 clues out of 50.
I am not a great fan of partial anagrams with odd letters hinted at. That’s too hard. Where does one start? Many thanks to Flashling. It is not a bad crossword. I quite liked 22d Locks – devices for fastening hair, although I didn’t get it.

  8. Enjoyed this one too never heard of the term needful and dont think i could ever catch myself ever using it…..prefer needy which i like to use often. I dont think i have ever seen ‘ant’ as a soldier? can anyone help why this means soldier?

  9. Vaness @9 Ant refers to Soldier ant which I think are large ants which bite. I’m sure I’ve seen them in wildlife programmes.

Just peeked to see if anyone had commented about the rugby. Oh well that’s how it goes.

  10. First time adding to the blog, always enjoy reading it. Have been a cryptic addict for some 30+ years starting with the Telegraph in UK. Now, the daily Herald is how I start my day, with Saturday’s Everyman being the culmination of my week. Enjoying it even more now that I regularly complete 80%+.

Joe,locks is a synonym for hair. Read clue as ‘Devices for fastening’ and ‘hair’ (double definition)

Vanessa, a ‘Soldier ant’ is a particularly nasty carnivorous ant, therefore soldier is an example of (perhaps) an ant.

    Hope that helps.

    Read you all next week.

  11. At least you weren’t beaten by the blossoms from the land of the rising sun a la R.S.A. Let’s see if the bulldogs can devour the wallabies on the 3rd..

  12. I didn’t do so well on this one either, only half finished. Not helped by having two young grand daughters to stay and keep occupied! I totally misread 11a. I had the wrong words for the anagram and didn’t look for a ‘sleuth’ as the answer. I liked most of the ones I didn’t get as well as 15a, and 2d once I got it.
