  1. Thanks Everyman and Matt.

    I enjoyed this and seem to remember I finished a little more quickly than usual, so the level must be right for a Quiptic.

    I cannot bring myself to read the Passenger Pigeon articles, too sad, the possible reasons for their dying out was one of the problems my year studied at university.

    CALVADOS, CONTEMPLATION and EMBATTLED, among others, were fun.

  2. I did wonder whether some clues (I particularly noted EMBATTLED) were possibly rather complex for an Everyman, and Matt’s difficulty with that one seems to confirm that. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the puzzle. My favourite clue (though a sad theme) was PASSENGER PIGEON, but I’ll also pick out the minimalist elegance of CALVADOS and CREDIT with their equally appropriate surfaces.

    Thanks to Everyman and Matt.

  3. This was a much better puzzle than last week’s. Three or four excellent clues which rewarded a bit of persistence. Thank you, Everyman!

    I did unpick 15d but ‘place in Washington first off’ for (S)eattle was one of those ‘get the answer and figure out why it might be right’ type of clues. He is a bit layered this bloke.

    The last two have had one homophone each, I’d like to see more and a few puns. One recent example I encountered elsewhere was ‘comic caper’ (9) for Superhero. Nice. These crosswords need more groans.

    And yes, I did solve this online (and early).

  4. I thought this one was a lot trickier than last week. Some of the clues bear little resemblence to the answers until I read this blog. Thank heavens for electronic devises!

  5. It still takes me ages to work these out and usually it’s ‘ think of the answer and then figure out the clue’. I certainly didn’t find it a quick solve. I liked 16 ac. Chicago. Those are the kinds of clues that I like, where the clue leads me to the answer.
    Happy New Year.

  6. I actually quite liked this one, tho so many clues are the reverse type of clue like others have noted
    I cannot understand 18d at all, classes without Right? I just dont get it, can someone explain? no one out there camping I hope!

  7. Hi Vanessa,
    learner = L
    when = AS
    classes = ratee = ATES
    rates is a synonym for classes (e.g.classing or rating wool).
    drop off the r because right is disregarded.

    Found this harder than usual. Mightn’t have got it all out if it hadn’t been raining.
