  1. Chu Chin Chow was a bit too obscure for me, but when on googling I realised this was the centennial of the original production, I suddenly saw a lot more centennials — 1, 27, 13. Perhaps they are more.

  2. Ian SW3 @ 2: You’ve got all of them. I initially intended to have some more, but just about everything else was some episode involving heaps of bodies and that all seemed too depressing, so I left it at the four you found.

Thanks to NealH for the review. I’d point out that “sub” isn’t just “subscription” – it does also mean “loan”.

  3. Obviously unintentional, but there is another centenary – 13dn became Prime Minister in 1916.

Nothing too difficult, but a bit of head-scratching required for a few of the clues. Thanks, Alchemi and NealH.

  4. This was one of those puzzles where I got stuck after only a few answers, put it away for a few hours and then everything slotted into place, although the bottom right corner took a while to finish.

Didn’t think 5dn was that obscure. I remember hearing bits of it on the radio in my youth. 22ac, on the other hand, I’d never heard of.

  5. I am extremely late to the party, so almost certainly no-one will read this comment.
I found this one of the harder puzzles by a setter who is close to my Top 10.

On my print-out a lot was left blank, too much actually.
Good to see a fine clue for ‘Smoke On The Water’ which tells the story of a devastating fire during a Deep Purple concert in the South of France way back when.

However, I am not convinced about 12ac.
Does ‘Car crashed into a hole outside’ really mean (CAR + A HOLE OUTSIDE)*?
