I need help parsing two clues here…

…I can’t see the parsing for 1dn. which makes me suspect I may not even have the right answer, and 19ac looks to have to many words in the clue.

Any help appreciated.

As to the rest of the puzzle, a few vague definitions aside and a minor quibble with 18ac, it was quite enjoyable.

Thanks, Jason.

  1. Thanks Jason and Loonapick,

19ac: This with end moved to end becomes hist(ory).

    1d Left in the ..

Two hoes and two teas, but I don’t think that is of any significance.

  2. Well done, Muffyword. I too was puzzled by 19ac (although not by 2dn). But thanks for the rest, loonapick. I found Jason unusually irritating today, although still most enjoyable — not just loonapick’s point on 18ac, but also weak 16ac and 20dn. Some nice ones — I liked 3dn and 8dn in particular.

  3. Again late to the party. A curious mix of the very good and the rather weak. 15d could have been anything. Reminded me of Rufus. They’re not one and the same are they? 19ac very contrived. Overall it was a lot of fun. Thanks to Jason and loonapick.

  4. Thanks Jason and loonapick

Found this a little more challenging than normal for this setter – can usually knock him over in a single session, but not this time.

Didn’t get 19a until coming here so thanks muffyword for that. With 20d, I had end doing double duty – a part of the definition as well as indicating S as the end of ‘is’.

I think with 18a, it is one of those punctuation-less clues – if you read it as ‘Primate; entering southern’ then you have it the right way round – some folk abide with this and others don’t – it does seem to happen more regularly though (as does the inverse, where a punctuation mark is put in to misdirect the other way).

Smiled at 8d. Finished in the SW corner with PUT YOURSELF DOWN, WINDSURFER and JABBERER the last few in.

  5. Thanks loonapick and Jason.

Interesting this with two new – for me – anagram indicators (powered up in 9ac and happy in 8dn).

    Then there are the problems.

2dn – Jason is equating “list” with “lurch” I think. The answer is part of LEFT IN THE LURCH – cryptic!

19ac I think is a triple. The 2nd and third parts are “close” (END) to (TO) “being done” (END) and “serially ” (END TO END) but I couldn’t get the first bit until now – short form of “history” is “hist” so move the front end of “this” to the back end.

I was caught out by 22ac though. I see from the printed solution that SCAM is correct. My first entry was SURE (S + URE) – sure us “fast” as in steady/stable and then when I saw 23dn was obviously ALLOW I changed to S + TAY on the same basis. So he fooled me twice over on the same clue.

By the way Xj, Rufus works under the pseudonym Dante in the FT.

  6. A bit late to the party, but:

22ac: STAY works as well. S + TAY, and you hold something fast to make it stay.
