  1. This is probably the first and last time I’m the first (only?) responder so couldn’t resist it, though everyone else has gone to another party by now. I found this one a struggle but got there in the end, very entertaining. For some reason I put TRUMPET at 20D even though it didn’t make sense, which held me up in that corner, but eventually realised my error.

  2. Wot, only one comment? So I’ll post one from 2020 after solving in The I. I found this a bit tougher than the usual Wednesday puzzle but a fun solve. The surface readings were excellent with too many good clues to mention any particular one. Thanks Daedalus.

  3. Made barely any headway with this but must give a shout-out to 20d – the contender now, alas, no longer merely a candidate.
