S&B York 2016? Preliminary Show of Hands, please!

For the latest update please click here.

A message from John Henderson:

As I did last year, I’m enquiring about the possibility of a Sloggers & Betters event in York in October 2016 along the same lines as those of 2014 & 2015.

I would be delighted to put this together if there is a consensus, and have checked that the same venue that we used last year is available again. With The Times having announced today that its Championships will run on October 22nd (not, as previously stated, the 15th), and also now that the Budock Vean event in Cornwall has been postponed until Spring 2017, can I suggest Saturday, October 29th as the date for the main event?

For those wishing to make a weekend of it, there would of course be the quizzical Ale Trail on the Friday night, and a “Recovery” session on the Sunday morning at the York Tap. Built into the recovery is an extra hour in bed due to the end of DST! The weekend also marks the end of school half-term week.

At the moment, would you please simply indicate whether your attendance (and those of other halves etc) would be likely. If numbers are good, I’ll be back with a request for more definite numbers, dietary details etc much later in the year.

Thanks, everyone!
John

Nice one, John – add two more to the tally.

I will surely be there, 101%.

  5. beery hiker

  6. Tom Johnson

Now that my annual Crossword Event at Budock Vean has been postponed until (probably) April 2017, I will be in York on the Saturday. Looking forward to it already.

  7. Richard Grafen

    Of course.

  8. My hand is up. Can’t wait.

  9. I will come too. Thank you.

  14. George Clements

Add Jennifer and me please John.
Best wishes to you and Jane.

  15. Poins

The date fits in with us being in the UK so Kath and I will be there.

  16. Phew! Daughter’s graduation is October 22nd. She’ll be delighted that I can now attend her ceremony rather than the more important S&B. 😉

Count me in – and I’ll try my best to drag ‘er indoors (SWMBI) as well.

  17. Good possibility that I could make that.

  18. Charles Barnwell

Sounds like fun. Add two to three probables.

  19. John Guest

    Two more please.

  20. DaveW

    And two more please, John.

  21. Eileen

    Yes please, John, of course!

And we’re hoping to see you and Jane – and lots of others – at Derby on 21st May http://www.fifteensquared.net/2016/01/18/sloggers-and-betters-event-derby-may-21st-2016/

  22. Radler

The two of us intend to attend

  23. John H

Well, I make that in excess of 30 already, so let’s make it a date!

I’d be grateful if those who haven’t yet indicated that they would like to attend would continue to add to this list, so that I have a regularly updated idea of numbers, even when this thread “falls off” the top of the page!

Notes for you to help plan your visit:

Venue confirmed, date confirmed, I recommend that those intending to stay in York get started NOW(!!!) on research for accommodation (and start saving up!). For the Saturday venue on Tadcaster Road, Burswood and Bentham Lodge guesthouses have had excellent reports over the last couple of years, but they are standard-York-weekend-pricy; other hotels nearby include Holiday Inn and Marriott (variable rates). A bus-ride away are Ibis Hotel and Premier Inn, and the Travelodge nearer to the city centre is apparently very reasonable. There is a large car park at the rear of the Fox and Roman.

For those coming to the quiz crawl on the Friday night, it starts at the York Tap (at York Station) at 6 prompt and moves every hour, on the hour – you may want to bear this in mind if you have heavy bags and want to check in to your hotel first. Chips, sandwiches etc will be on offer at the 7pm pub.

I’m not planning (m)any changes to the last two years’ itinerary. If you want to know how it works, either ask one of the gang or do a search for “York S&B” on this site.

    Thanks, everyone.

    John

  24. JuneG

I hope to be there (daughter’s fortieth birthday celebrations permitting!). Many thanks, John.

  25. My budget say argghh, but my heart says yeehaa! Looking forward to being there for the Friday and Saturday, and cheers for running this again – was much fun last year.

  26. flashling

Cath and I will be there but next grandchild due near the time. Could be called away at short notice…

  27. Helen O

Sid and I plan to be there – hoorah!

  28. Tom R

Well if I’m fit enough, I’ll certainly be there. (Mrs R may well come along too). Please put us down as “definitely maybes”, John.

  29. Neil Robinson

Definitely there for the Saturday, and hopefully for the Friday evening.

  30. allan_c

Yes, put me down for Saturday.

  31. jean-luc cheval

    Never been to York.
I look forward to seeing you all there.

  32. Monk/Sparks

Fully intending to be there 😉 [Mental note: never again jog 1.5 miles from Fox and Roman to York station, tired and emotional at end of S&B, with two large dictionaries in rucksack … leaving 180 seconds to sprint across 12 platforms at Leeds for last train home. Not forgetting having heart in mouth as inter-stag-party war developed in carriage, thus disturbing one’s “time for the Times”.]

  33. Mrs SL and I plan to be there

  34. baerchen

    hi John,
I fancy a weekend in GOC – count me in for both events please.
    Best,
    Rob/Knut

  35. JimS

Would you put me down for two for the Saturday please.

    Thanks

  36. Mickinely

    Hi John

Hope it’s not too late. I’d like to come for both nights please.

    Mick
