There was a tradition in both our families of solving Telegraph concise and cryptic crosswords. During our student days we moved on to the Observer. When we could afford a daily, we enjoyed the Guardian cryptics until the Indy arrived on the scene. Nowadays, Saturdays are not complete without the Inquisitor in the i paper. We never time ourselves but we do feel cheated if we finish quickly and really enjoy seeking out themes and ninas etc. We are now retired and when time allows, we supplement the daily Indy solve with the on-line Guardian cryptic, Genius and the occasional Quiptic. Finding fifteensquared was a revelation – we realised we are not alone in our attempts to stave off Alzheimer’s!

Many thanks to Sil for standing in for us while were off on our travels. We’ve missed several Indy puzzles while we were away and are gradually catching up – fortunately we’ve had a full week to get back into the routine, and lo and behold it’s a Phiday!

Lots of trademark clues from Hoskins today (sex, drugs and drink) – Bert did wonder whether the whole crossword had been written around 18d.

We cannot believe how quickly the weeks have flown by just lately – all too soon, we have another Phi to solve this Phi-day. If there are any errors or omissions we may not be able to sort things out until later when we have some wi-fi access.
