Hihoba

Hihoba is a combination of the names of three retired men who spend (waste?) more time than they should solving crosswords. We hope that it is helping us to fight off incipient Alzheimers. We operate separately, and then combine resources if (usually when) we get stuck. It’s all done by email now, but I have records to show that we’ve been doing the Inquisitor and its predecessor the Weekend Crossword back into the days when you had to ring people up and actually talk to them!

Inquisitor 1634: Desperation by Kruger

February 25, 2020 at 10:00 am by Hihoba

Well, I found this pretty taxing, Kruger. The general theme became clear quite quickly with 24 across having only one possibility once a reasonable number of answers had been filled in. However, parsing … Read more >>

February 4, 2020 at 10:00 am by Hihoba

Hi of Hihoba here again. I’m trying to pay back my fellow bloggers who took up the slack when I was unwell, so two in a row from me. I do enjoy Chalicea’s … Read more >>

Inquisitor 1630: Lawgiver by Nutmeg

January 28, 2020 at 11:16 amJanuary 28, 2020 at 10:00 am by Hihoba

Hello Inquisitor lovers. I’m glad to be back after some rather unpleasant hospital treatment. This is the first time I have been able to even attempt an Inquisitor – mostly due to the … Read more >>

Inquisitor 1614: ‘Here’s Something’ from Skylark

October 8, 2019 at 10:00 am by Hihoba

Another new setter. Welcome Skylark! Simple rubric: Twenty-one clues contain an additional letter in the wordplay which should be removed before solving. In clue order these (with the insertion of an apostrophe and … Read more >>

Inquisitor 1611: Keep Recycling by Hob

September 18, 2019 at 8:38 amSeptember 17, 2019 at 10:01 am by Hihoba

This seems, from the archive, to be Hob’s first inquisitor. If so, welcome Hob. I enjoyed it a lot. The preamble read: Using REMAINS, seven letters in the completed grid must be altered … Read more >>

Inquisitor 1610: Escape to the Country by Harribobs

September 10, 2019 at 11:50 amSeptember 10, 2019 at 10:01 am by Hihoba

Ah! Harribobs again. Always tricky, but fair. The preamble, if long, seemed pretty straightforward. 15 clues where the wordplay gave an extra letter, these extra letters to spell out some assistance to solvers. … Read more >>

Inquisitor 1606: Posthum(or)ous by Phi

August 13, 2019 at 10:00 am by Hihoba

I haven’t done a crossword since the end of May as I’ve been sailing round Britain in a 35 foot yacht (you can see my blog of the trip here if you are … Read more >>

Inquisitor 1594: Milpar by Ifor

May 22, 2019 at 12:04 pmMay 22, 2019 at 12:01 am by Hihoba

A non-word title and a long complex rubric. I feared I was in for a long haul. Solvers must attempt to divide the clues to find two groups. In one group, whose answers … Read more >>

Inquisitor 1590: My Pet Project by Kruger

April 24, 2019 at 12:01 am by Hihoba

Hmm. Quite hard, I thought, Kruger. Most clues contain a single letter misprint in their definitions. The correct letters, in clue order, give an oft-repeated line of a verse. The preceding line explains … Read more >>

Inquisitor 1586: Carte Blanche by Eclogue

March 27, 2019 at 12:01 am by Hihoba

First, a mention of the sad news accompanying this puzzle, that Schadenfreude is no more. I was in awe for many years of the creativity of his puzzles and the accuracy of his … Read more >>

Inquisitor 1582: Missing Flight Bag by Ifor

February 27, 2019 at 12:01 am by Hihoba

Ifor is a pretty prolific Inquisitor setter, his last two puzzles being the Heart Transplant puzzle (1562) and the Molesworth “Down with Skool” puzzle (1575). The extensive rubric to this one read: Two … Read more >>

Inquisitor 1578: Taking Liberties by Dysart

January 30, 2019 at 12:01 am by Hihoba

Dysart has been setting occasional Inquisitors from the early days, starting with no 18, though rarely more than one a year. I blogged his last Inquisitor (1514) in October 2017. Each unclued entry … Read more >>

December 5, 2018 at 7:19 pmDecember 5, 2018 at 12:01 am by Hihoba

This was one of the most amazing feats of grid construction I have ever encountered. Harribobs is one of the masters of the art. This is only his fourth Inquisitor so far, but … Read more >>

Inquisitor 1566: Alter Ego by Kruger

November 7, 2018 at 12:01 am by Hihoba

Bit of a slog, this one, with huge numbers of “noise” words in the clues and a slight ambiguity in the final instruction. The rubric (long and complex) read: Half of the clues … Read more >>
