Punk makes a rare appearance in the Independent. His alter ego in the Guardian, Paul, is a setter who for me has – of late, at least – proved consistently unsolveable. So I approached this one with some trepidation.
Pierre
Guardian Quiptic 1,341/Pangakupu
A delightful surprise for me this morning when I opened up the Quiptic and found Pangakupu’s byline at the top.
Independent on Sunday 1,849/Filbert
Filbert back in his usual Sunday slot, with a puzzle that took a bit of teasing out, for this solver at least.
Everyman 4,109/20 July
Another week, another Everyman, with all the usual trademarks.
Independent 12,100/Salty
Salty’s sixth puzzle in the Indy, but the first one to come up on my watch. A pleasure to solve and blog – one or two chewy clues, but all fairly indicated and some delightful surfaces.
Guardian Quiptic 1,339/Anto
Anto’s Quiptics in the past have often solicited comments along the lines of ‘decent puzzle, but not a Quiptic’.
Guardian Quiptic 1,337/Pasquale
Another fine Quiptic from Pasquale. I fancy that less experienced and improving solvers will have appreciated this one.
Independent on Sunday 1,845/Filbert
Filbert in his customary Sunday slot with another carefully-constructed and pleasing puzzle.
Independent 12,082/Brunel
A puzzle from Brunel that fits the ‘serious daily cryptic’ definition pretty well, I thought.
Everyman 4,105/22 June
Alan Connor continues as the setter of the Everyman under the paper’s new ownership. Another sound puzzle from him here.
Guardian Quiptic 1,335/Chandler
Chandler is a regular but not particularly frequent setter of the Quiptic, and also produces crosswords for the Quick Cryptic slot in the Guardian.
Independent 12,064/Hippogryph
A sound and entertaining puzzle from Hippogryph to get the puzzling week in the Independent underway.
Guardian Quiptic 1.333/Pasquale
Pasquale always offers us a carefully constructed and tractable crossword when he is in the Quiptic slot.
Independent on Sunday 1,841/Filbert
Filbert is most often to be seen these days in the Independent on Sunday slot. I found this an enjoyable challenge which took a while to tease out, but fell nicely once I had a bit of a foothold in the grid. Some delightful surfaces as always from this setter.
Everyman 4,101/25 May
New owners at The Observer, but happily for Everyman fans, the same old crossword. All the trademark clues in a pleasing and tractable cryptic.
