Financial Times 14432 Sayang

A gentle puzzle to start the FT week with.  An FT debut for this pseudonym, which I don’t think anyone has come across before, here or in the other UK dailies.  I suspect some connection with S.E.Asia, as the principal meaning of “sayang” in Indonesian and Malay is “sweetheart” or “loved one”, and the word is also in Tagalog.  Perhaps the setter will shed some light him/herself.  Definitions are underlined in the clues. [[The pictures at the bottom have unidentified links to the puzzle. Please enclose any comments on them in double brackets. Thank you.]]

  1. Thanks scchua, and welcome Sayang.

I liked IMMORTAL, ISOLATE and OSCAR.

[[Pic 4 is Katy Perry, who kissed a girl, liked it, but may not be a LESBIAN]]

  2. Thanks scchua and welcome Sayang. BODE was my loi, deceptively simple. Overall a good opening puzzle, tho I’m not too sure about 15a – is it fair to expect solvers to know the names of setters?

  3. [[Muffyword, Katy Perry is right, and so is LESBIAN, but unfortunately, they’re separate answers. I’ve added links to the answers under the pics.]]

  4. Sorry, scchua (if you’re still there), but I don’t get the significance of picture 6. Is it just that Oskar (the protagonist of the Tin Drum) sounds like Oscar?
