Welcome back to the telegraph puzzles site – a complex preamble this week. 30 misprinted definitions, 4 unclued entries, seven clashes in the grid and 3 cells to be highlighted. Sounds like fun.
Took me a while to get going in this one, with some quite tricky to spot misprints. But soon it started to take shape. When I’d solved a couple of the unclued entries Herdess and Herd boy combined with the 2dn which indicated the sheep theme, it became apparent that the misprints spelt out 4 types of sheep. A couple of the clues also had sheep or shepherd references

The clashes all lay on the diagonal from Top left to bottom right going through the central entry MORNING. Which led to the final piece of the jigsaw for me – with the clashes resolving to WARNING going through the central MORNING leaving SKY to be highlighted in Red based on the phrase “Red sky in the morning is a shepherd’s warning”. I must admit I always was taught it as “Red sky in the morning is a sailor’s warning – red sky at night is a shepherd’s delight” – but I should n’t argue with the Oxford dictionary of Quotations.

A fine puzzle as usual from Samuel, and thanks for the blog, twencelas. I got sidetracked for a bit thinking that the required diagonal was DARNING and it was something to do with sowing or knitting — hence the sheep! It was only when I examined the alternative WELIGHT that I managed to put two and two together.
Thanks for the write-up, Twencelas. Take Heed was originally scheduled for later in the year, but the opportunity to use it as a follow-up to the previous week’s Little Bo Peep puzzle (EV1105, Strategy by Nutmeg) in which sheep went astray was too tempting to resist. Hopefully this didn’t leave solvers feeling too sheepish.

anyone have any idea why a pastor and a tar box “must take heed”?
peterbrand – “The red sky in the morning is a shepherd’s warning” – means take heed. A pastor/ tar box are associated with shepherds is my reading of the title.
