Cambridge S & B – now confirmed: 25 April 2015

We are delighted to announce that there will be a Sloggers & Betters meeting in Cambridge next spring. The date is Saturday 25 April 2015, the venue a nice pub:   The Castle Inn.

So far, 25+ cruciverbalists showed their interest with a clear “yes!”. If you changed your mind or if you want to add your name to the list of potential attendees, please be so kind to tell us here at Fifteensquared, now or at a later point (closer to the date).   Having said that, everyone’s welcome, at any stage, even at the last minute.

Details (how to get there, food, parking etc) will be given later.

Meanwhile, we want to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. The world is a turbulent place, also one to be treasured.

  1. I was a “possibly” in the original thread, but now I’ll make that a definite “yes”. It’ll be the first I’ve had a chance to attend since Todmorden in April 2012, so I’m looking forward to it.

  2. We’re all looking forwards to seeing you all in our neck of the woods!

Have a wonderful festive period one and all,

    Jon

  3. hi everyone,

I’d very much like to fly over for this; I haven’t attended one of these gatherings and it seems high time. Any idea yet of a rough time for kick-off? (it would help me to decide which flight to book).
best wishes to all for a Happy Christmas

  4. Thanks all three for organising this. It’s in my diary and I’m looking forward to seeing faces old and new.

  5. Yes, as advised earlier, I’d hope to get to this . However, similar point to comment #10 above by baerchen, some outline indication at this stage of likely starting and finishing times would be a great help in planning travel.

    Many thanks to the organisers.

  6. There is a proposal for a rail link between Oxford and Cambridge – will it be constructed in time?

Never mind, I’m sure I can do my usual campsite and bus pass thing.

  7. It’s proposed that it’s a mid-day to 6-7pm type of day and see where we feel like going after that.

  8. I’ve booked the campervan into the campsite at Cherry Hinton but the local bus service (Citi1) doesn’t appear to go anywhere near Castle Street. Do any of you locals have suggestions because I can’t walk very far?

  9. Thanks for organising this, guys. I’ve never been to Cambridge, so I’m doubly glad to be able to say, `Count me in please.`

I phoned The Castle and discovered that`there are two Castles in Cambridge` and plenty of B&Bs on Chesterton Road, about a mile away from the S&B venue. Reservation made.

  10. Jan @17
Hi. You can take the citi1 as far as the centre (ask for John Lewis in St Andrew’s St.) and take a short taxi ride from the rank there to The Castle. I hope this is a help.

  11. Jan (@16), please do not worry about how to get there at this moment. The Cherry Hinton caravan site is indeed a bit off the track but closer to the date I will advise you what’s best.
The Castle Inn – not to be confused with The Castle in Regents Street – isn’t right in the centre of town (but it is close to the Backs), also not near the railway station (a 30 minutes’ touristic walk) nor has it its own parking facilities (but then, Cambridge isn’t car-friendly anyway and certainly not on a Saturday!).
However, it is a venue with (in my opinion) the right atmosphere.
And as I said in the preamble, details on how to get there as comfortably as possible will follow later.

  12. Hi Sil, Phil & Jon;

Wow! An S&B just up the road from me, in one of my favourite pubs, an Adnam’s outpost run buy ex-Rutle John Halsey (Barry Wom – see ‘about us’ on their website). I had the privilege of playing his drums one evening at his previous pub in Stradbroke, Suffolk when I was a member of Bob Kerr’s Whoopee Band.

Certainly hoping to be there. It less than a 10-minute walk from the main city centre bus stops. Services Citi 5 and 6 and Busway B serve stops very near the pub. Dozens of buses from Station to city centre, though sadly not Citi 5 or 6 or Busway B!

It’s quite a pleasant walk from the centre; through the bustling commercial centre then past smaller non-name artisan shops, the famous Round Church, a parade of eateries opposite pretty college buildings, Magdelene Bridge (view the punts!) and College, the Folk Museum, Kettle’s Yard Gallery. You pass a total of three pubs en route, there are two more just beyond as well as a row of ethnic restaurants.

I need to check my work diary, Sil, but I am sure I will be there.

    Tim.

  13. Yes indeed, Tim.
Seeing Wom (and McQuickly) was enough to have that one right.
Sadly, every other question was way above my head.
That said, it’s the best quiz show on the tele.
It may be about knowledge but it’s also not about knowledge.
I have been an addict since it started, years and years ago.

Thanks for being such an excellent pre-guide for those who’d like to see something of this beautiful city on their way from the railway station to the Castle Inn.

Great to see you at the forthcoming S&B.

  14. Hi –
Will do my damnedest to be there – great to see people in Cambridge (where I live). Will bring along a Cambridge-themed puzzle I set a while back. Food at the Castle’s excellent!

  15. Sorry to be slow replying. It’s taken a while to work out arrangements. Now, barring accidents (as per kruger@30), I will definitely be there. Looking forward to it!
