Private Eye (Cyclops / 824) Topless Harem

When I solved this I expected to be complaining here about the lack of references to a certain recently-arrested “man in his sixties from Norfolk”, but indeed a week is a long time in politics – in that time Peter Mandelson, the Prince of Darkness himself has also been assisting the police with their enquiries.

Perhaps the next issue’s puzzle will feature he-who-does-not-sweat.

This was fun to solve over a few drinks, albeit with quite a few references to people I prefer not to think about.

Nothing really held me up except LOI SOMERSET, largely because I misread ‘county’ in the clue as ‘country’. Definitely due to the small font.

Thanks to Cyclops for the puzzle.

A bit of a celebration is in order. My first ever cryptic crossword was in March 2022 when a pal introduced Cyclops no.724 to our little Wordle group. This was my 100th Cyclops (824) as I’ve been doing them ever since, along with Daily Telegraph and Guardian puzzles as I got more into them. Thanks for the blog simonbyc and of course Cyclops for all the fun. Can I have a least favourite clue 10a? They should have issued a warning on the news before showing that image of him in his pants. That was scary.

Congratulations on the milestone, TFC @1!

Re 10a and that photo – at least he wasn’t topless.

  3. mc_rapper67

TFC at #1 – congrats on the 100 Not Out, but may I disagree? 10A was probably my COD – not ‘clue of the day’, but of the decade! I am ‘intensely relaxed’ at his downfall, and that of the ’66-year-old man’ from Windsor/Sandringham…hopefully soon followed by an 80-odd-year-old from Florida…
Thanks, as usual, to Cyclops and simonbyc.

Thanks Cyclops (nice puzzle) and simonbyc (great blog).

Special mention to NOTICED, PENDULUM and MARK CARNEY.

    TOPLESS
Some place: Is ‘some’ redundant in the wordplay or does it say ‘take some letters of ‘place”?
(pl stands for place, even without that ‘some’. right?)
    NOTICED
    Donald on double duty? 🙂

Thanks for the blog , well done TFC@1 but perhaps your 101st ?
A fitting puzzle anyway , I wonder if this is the first use of ICE in puzzles ? Diamonds may get a break .
Perhaps it will be Kevin’s turn next puzzle .

Anyone else notice that 11d SOCKS is the same clue and the same answer as 5a in Cyclops 725, April 2022? I remember it particularly because I at first put in BALLS as the answer until I got some down answers.

  7. TheFatContoller

MC at #3 – It wasn’t the clue so much as the subject matter. That photo of him in the budgie smugglers would give anyone the willies.😲

  8. Saaaam

    10a – what a fantastic clue!

Thanks simonbyc for the blog – I was stumped for Barbie=MEAL.

  9. Etu

I only just got round to this, but at least the next issue hasn’t arrived yet.

Haha! I read county as country too, with same result.

Sadly I think that the desired news items might have been knocked off the top slots by recent events…

    Cheers one and all.

Thanks simonbyc & Cyclops. Congratulations TFC@1. Michael John @6 I don’t have you’re impressive memory but I initially thought that 11d was BALLS (so to speak). I marked 8a as a fave but they were all tough but fair. Cheers
