Beelzebub 1,316

Fairly steady progress this week, with just a handful to check in Chambers at the end.

I made life difficult for myself by entering “theatrephone” at 10 across. Entirely my fault, but then I felt I could justify P[ol]E + AKA for the unfamiliar 6 down.

*=anagram, []=dropped, <=reversed. Hover to expand abbreviations.

Across
1 A-PER-SE – APE + R[o]SE.
6 PANZERNZ in REAP<.
10 THEATROPHONE – ATROPH[y] in THE ONE.
11 ROOP – POOR<.
12 RAPE OIL – APE in ROIL.
14 SPEAKERINE – PEAK in SERINE. Specifically a female announcer.
15 SPLATPL in SAT.
17 THAR – [goa]T HAR[dly].
18 EDUCABLEED + U + CABLE.
19 COVERAGE – COVE + RAGE.
21 NIUEU in NIE.
25 PYREX – P[artl]Y + REX.

27 ISOKONT – IS + OK + ON + [spi]T.
28 ASCI – [f]ASCI[a].
29 NATURAL ORDER – (DUEL NARRATOR)*.
30 GRAITHG + RAITH. Is “Raith” really a team? The footy team is Raith Rovers, but perhaps the town has a caber tossing side or similar named simply “Raith”.
31 ENSURES in (E + RUNE)<.
Down
1 AT RESTR in A TEST.
2 PHOSPHORUS – PH + [b]OSPHORUS.
3 RAPPAREE – PARE in RAPE.

13 INFLUENCER – UNCLE* in INFER.
16 MAN-YEARS – MANY EARS. Nice clue that raised a chuckle.
19 CODING – DIN in COG. As a programmer working for a record company, the clue could define my career right now! Noise interrupting functionary’s work on computer.
20 GUTTLEG + [b]UTTLE.
22 EXPIRE – EX + PI + RE.
23 FLOTA – LOT in FA.
24 DINAH – I in HAND<.

  1. Thanks Simon. Just to let you know someone is listening. Re 19down: career? I vaguely remember such a thing.

As I have said before, dare we assume the NZ references are a clue to which one of them it is, or is it a bluff?

IAC respect as always to Beelzebub.

  2. The Beelzebub you have is the alumnus of St Andrews who rode the train past Raith Rovers’ ground on a regular basis. While Dundee was nearer with two teams in a higher division there was still talk of “how Raith were doing”. And much amusement at the Sassenach who commented, after some exhibition of giant-killing, that there’d be “celebrations in the town of Raith tonight”.
