Pic 2, is the cartoon character DROOPY a Basset Hound?
on second thoughts, probably these are Blood Hounds, Basset hounds have short legs.
Hi Cookie, only meant to illustrate “hound” with pic2 though DROOPY is general understood to be a basset hound.
Hint: 4 of the answers have something in common.
Hi scchua, hope you have settled down again now, guess you have since you found the time to prepare a quiz…
Pic 5, CARIBOU skins can be used to make low-grade parchment.
Pic 4 from “Excalibur”, which features a ROUND table?
Raleigh’s gesture @1 might be considered a bit CAMP?
#1 shows RALEIGH, which is a make of BICYCLE
Hi muffin, I was wondering if ROUND, along with BICYCLE and CLIMBER might have something to do with the Tour de France?
#4 Excalibur is a BICYCLE
#5 is I think The Canterbury Tales. There is the Miller’s Tale and Miller is a type of (motor)BIKE?
Hi Robi, I think CARIBOU is also a bicycle, they make bike frames; cannot link it to the quiz, but Sir Walter did go to America…
Pic 5 is Chaucer as a pilgrim from the Ellesmere manuscript
#3 shows Marg Helgenberg from CSI. A bit obscure but there is an episode called ‘Hitting for the Cycle’
The Canterbury Tales is just Geoffrey Chaucer’s poetic CYCLE.
Pic1 That’s Raleigh, whose namesake is the famous Raleigh BICYCLE Company.
You’re along the right track with:
Pic3 Those two are from the CSI cast
Pic4 That’s from Excalibur, but who’s he?
Pic5 Yes, the Canterbury Tales, but which one?
In addition, of the 7, 2 answers are each repeated twice.
Robi, Pilgrims is also a make of BICYCLE.
#7 shows Nani from Man United doing a backflip – Giovanni Pinarello, widely known as Nani, and as the grandfather of Italian cycle racing, founded the globally successful Pinarello company which built the BIKES [CYCLES] that carried Bradley Wiggins and Chris Froome to Tour de France victories for Team Sky.
Looks like Patrick Stewart, but….
Maybe The Pardoner’s appearance which reflected his spiritual state: “thin and DROOPY.”
Pic 5, there is The Wife of Bath’s Tale, with ASSES,
Thou seist, that oxen, asses, hors, and houndes,
They been assayd at diverse stoundes;
It is Patrick Stewart but it’s his later starring role that’s the link
It’s not Nani in particular.
Pic 4- Patrick Stewart was in a Star Trek series that had DATA as a robot character
Right, Shirl.
Is pic 7 an example of a BICYCLE kick?
pic 6 – it seems that WILLOW bark is used to treat acne
Pic 2, “Hound” is also a BICYCLE brand name.
Right again, Shirl.
Footballers have BICYCLE kicks in their repertoire, though that is a clebratory backflip that Nani is doing.
WILLOW bark is a source of salicylic acid, which may be used to treat acne.
And that leaves 2.
Well done, Shirl; I had dismissed bicycle kick as it wasn’t one. You can see these here.
I thought we had done 2?
DROOPY the cartoon character is also called a happy hound – see @1
The hound has an olfactory LOBE the size of a walnut, ours is the size of a pea…
Sorry Robi. I meant two answers.
Maybe you meant that leaves two to do i.e. #3 and #5?
I think when scchua says “that leaves 2” he means 2 pics, the CSI one and the Canterbury Tales
Sorry Robi & scchua, we crossed
#3: Director Catherine WILLOWS is a fictional character, portrayed by Marg Helgenberger, from the CBS crime drama CSI
pic 5 – surely there is a HERB GARDEN in the Canterbury Tales somewhere?
Right, Robi.
Er…that’s 3 characters amongst the 7 answers.
#5 In The Merchant’s Tale, the knight’s other friend is called PLACEBO
Thanks scchua – I’m always impressed by the breadth of knowledge that you have, enabling you to find these obscure connections with solutions to the crossword!
P.S. no blog on the Rufus today yet. Anyone know why?
Shirl @36, I searched for a HERB GARDEN but did not find one, however there is a medieval one in Canterbury.
Wonder if HERB is a character, Robi’s PLACEBO is brilliant.
Robi, well done. You nailed the last one.
Thanks scchua and welcome back
Thanks scchua for the fun.
Thanks sccua, tricky but fun.
… or even scchua …
