Enigmatic Variations 1250 Second Best by Oxymoron

As Chambers gives as an example of an Oxymoron – would this puzzle prove to be a form of cruel kindness or would that be falsely true. My tussles with Oxymoron or his other alias go back further than I care to remember.

Always a challenge and likewise always a painful pleasure. Oxymoron’s use of unusual definitions always gets me reaching for Chambers to confirm an obscure meaning. Though this one was missing, what I regard as his trademark,  cat for vomit (the setter is more commonly found as Schadenfreude).

Quite a slog certainly but as always nice and precise clues get you there in the end. As to this week’s theme letters needed to be removed from the answers to fill the perimeter which after much head scratching yielded “NEXT TO THE ORIGINATOR OF A GOOD SENTENCE IS THE FIRST QUOTER OF IT”.   The quotation being by RALPH (middle of 3rd row) WALDO middle of 6th row EMERSON middle of 9th row.

All in all a challenging grid fill with much head scratching and a nice revelation at the end as the perimter was gradually filled up.

Thanks Oxymoron

Thanks to blogger and setter – I concur with your use of the words ‘painful pleasure’, ‘slog’, ‘challenging grid fill’, ‘head scratching’ and ‘nice revelation’…in fact, they would be the main constituents of a haiku on this puzzle!

Hard but well worth the effort, I thought. You can’t go wrong with a bit of Oxymoron.
