Cyclops 614 – Old-School Pain-in-the-arse

To whom could Cyclops possibly be referring?…oh yes, there he is at 1A…

An enjoyable, and not too taxing, solve this fortnight, or rather this week, as Private Eye seem to have squeezed in an extra edition before their Christmas Special, which landed on my doorstep this morning…

Several digs at some familiar establishment targets in the surface readings – Blair, Corbyn, Brenda (Her Maj), the Tories – Rees-Mogg and generally…and from across the pond references to Mike Pence, and POTUS/the Trump himself.

Maybe more than the usual helping of schoolboy-ish rudery as well – CROTCH, VOMIT, COPULATE, GASSINESS and ARSE feature as/in solutions, ‘pervy’, ‘bollocks’, ‘flatulence’, ‘shit’ and ‘screwed’ are spread out amongst the clues. In counterpoint, some more classical/idyllic, even ‘OLD-SCHOOL’, references – ETRUSCAN, ELSINORE, ABACUS, RURAL, VICE VERSA and MAGUS.

I guess you could say, as I think the Bee Gees once sang: ‘It’s only words…’!

TOP BANANA, that Cyclops, and Merry Christmas to one and all…

thanks  for the explanations mc_rapper67. There were a couple I could not fully parse although had the solutions. 12 a I suppose RIch in the sense of the expression …it’s a bit rich…… 4d I was blinkered by thinking that gents must represent two names “Ur” and “Al”. Nice clue though.

I liked 10a which provoked a bit of a chuckle.

Thanks to you, beermagnet and Cyclops and wish you all a happy Christmas
