SAME DATE – CHANGE OF VENUE
Unfortunately, we have discovered that the Pitcher & Piano has changed its priorities post-pandemic and no longer stocks real ales or cask beers, and also is not dog-friendly.
We have therefore booked the Conservatory at The Embankment near Trent Bridge from 11am till 5pm on Saturday 24th June. This is a Castle Rock Brewery pub with a good range of real ales and welcomes dogs. It will be busy on 24th June as it is the 3rd day of the Women’s Ashes Test against Australia at Trent Bridge, and we are therefore asked to pre-order food from the Menu – click here
If you are intending to join us, please let us have your menu choice when you respond to this announcement. We will need this by Monday 19th June.
Apologies to those who have already informed us that they are coming – we hope that the change of venue will not cause any inconvenience. If you are still intending to come, please confirm that you have read this announcement and let us have your menu choices.
There is some parking at the venue, but spaces will be limited due to the Test Match across the river. If you are coming to Nottingham by car, we would strongly advise using the various Park and Ride sites around the city, using the tram or bus to the city centre and then walking or taking one of the many bus services (below) to The Embankment.
If arriving by train, it is a 15 minute easy walk from the station, or 5 minutes on any of the following buses, which all stop outside the station concourse: 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 33 or 90. You will need to get off at Victoria Embankment.
As before, there will be a short walking tour of the City centre for anyone who might be interested. This will start at the train station and finish at The Embankment (approx 75 minutes in total). We will contact anyone who expresses an interest to agree a time to start the walk.
We hope to see you there.
Thanks for reorganising this, B&J. I’m planning to come. As a Nottingham resident, I’ll not take up your offer of a walking tour.
Thanks B&J – I hope to be there. I’m unlikely to join the walking tour.
Ok, I should be able to make that. Looking forward to it.
We can make it and would enjoy the tour.
I hope to be there, but as a fairly frequent visitor to Nottingham I’ll omit the tour.
Good to see it’s rescheduled, I’ll certainly be there for the pub.
Hoping to make this. No walking tour though.
I’m sure I have seen it before but what does S&B stand for and can beginners / not very good solvers attend?
Fiona it’s open to everyone. It started as setters and bloggers but over the years it’s been open to all and sundry. The more the merrier.
Will be there. Fish and chips for me.
Still hoping to attend, but National Rail have yet to release their engineering schedule for that weekend so no Advance tickets & can’t be certain of issues! Once that’s confirmed I’ll let you know on here & confirm food.
Excellent choice of Pub, great selection of Ales from Castle Rock Brewery and a plethora of fantastic guest beers! As solvers who literally live around the corner we look forward to meeting others!!
Yep, I still hope to be there, and fish & chips will suit me fine!
Hi B&J Cath and I (plus Jenny the dog) will be there at the Embankment, can we have 2 American Hot Pizza & a portion of chunky chips, thanks.
For me the Embankment is a much better venue. Fish and Chips for me too please. Incidentally the 6 to 10 buses go from the nearest stop to the station entrance so they are probably the best ones to aim for. I can walk to the Embankment so will give the tour a miss (though the last one was enjoyable and interesting).
I’ll join the fish and chip queue, please.
Please count me in. Fish & chips also
Jenny and Charles are happy with the change and would still like the tour.
We’ll check out the menu.
Very pleased to see that people are happy about the change of venue.
Fiona Anne @8 – we do hope that you are able to join us too.
I’m OK about the change of venue. Fish and chips for me too, please.
A much better venue though not quite so convenient for me. However I’ll force myself to go the extra mile.
I live in Nottingham and I’m wondering what happens at these get togethers (apart from food and drink and almost certainly decent chat) . . . I’ve been doing the Guardian and FT cryptics for 2 or 3 years and sometimes can do them and sometimes I’m completely stumped. Would appreciate some info. Thanks.
Hi Eric Eric. You have hit the nail on the head in terms of drink, food and decent chat.
We have enjoyed meeting setters, bloggers and generally other people who are interested in crosswords. There are often crosswords available to solve but some people seem to enjoy just chatting and taking the puzzles away with them.
We do hope that you are able to join us. All are welcome.
Thanks for that . . . I will let you know.
Hi B&J – I’m planning to be there – just bought my ticket and no engineering works to be seen…
I should be arriving about 11.30…happy to do the walk from the station at 12-ish…and I would like to have the ‘steak ‘n’ dips’ option, with extra onion rings….
I need to run for the 18.12 or 19.12 train…I’m sure others will be heading back to Lun-dun around then…
Right, still no word on advance tickets from London, so I shall be heading up via the luxurious but crucially cheaper medium of a coach. Should be in Nottingham at about midday on Saturady then heading back mid-Sunday afternoon.
I’ll take the veggie fireball burger please.
Sorry for our delay in choosing food.
Jenny would like scampi and fish and chips for Charles.
Is this event always held in Nottingham? I ask as my other half (and superior solver) will be stewarding at the aforementioned Test Match on this occasion, but we would like to attend another time
Hi Bookworm. The East Midlands get-together could be in Derby, Leicester or Nottingham. There are others around the country too.
You are most welcome on your own – you do not have to be a ‘superior solver’! Your other half can join us if they wish, whenever they are free.
I suppose Trip to Jerusalem could be lacking space for such an event!
Hi, B&J – I intend to be there. Nottingham resident so I’ll say no to the walking tour (unless you need any help with it), and I’ll have the Buffalo Blue Burger.
Fish ‘n chips for me too.
We will be attending- just to make sure Check buys his round!
Scampi x 2 please
SimpleSimon (Chris & Sue)
Bit late to be adding my name to the list but I’m hoping there’s still room? I’ll join those ordering F&C if I may.
Being a Midlander, I have visited Nottingham on a number of occasions so will pass on the tour, thanks.
PM
Not too late Postmark.
Bert has tried to contact those people who are coming but haven’t selected their menu choices. These may have ended up in junk. The deadline is Monday 19th.
He has also arranged to meet the 2 people who were interested in the walk at 11:00 by Costas in the station forecourt. If you would like to join them, please do.
Plan to arrive around lunchtime, all being well. Chickenburger and chunky chips for food order please.
Thanks to B&J for organising things.
Tom R
Should arrive around 12:30. Chicken burger with fries please.
Will you still be going in the evening? I should be able to pop in later.
Having rearranged a campervan trip, I should be there hopefully between 13:00 and 14:00. I will have eaten by the time I get there so no need for food order. As I used to work just over the road no need for the tour either but I’d recommend having a quick pint of one of their own brews in The Trent Navigation as part of said tour.
Tess and I will be there, hoping to arrive around midday. Missed the deadline for ordering food, but I will find a sandwich somewhere.
I’ll be there tomorrow after lunch for a while. I’ve tried to persuade the five year-old to tag along but he’s having none of it. As I live just over the bridge in Lady Bay I can’t pass this one up!
Have fun, everyone , tomorrow.
,Unfortunately I can once more not be there – perhaps next time? Who knows.
Sil
Really good to hear from you Sil. We wish you all the best and will raise a glass or two to you. Fingers crossed for the next one.
Thinking of you, Sil, and remembering first meeting you at our first Derby Day, 14 years ago and hoping to see you again soon.
With best wishes,
Eileen x
Would be great if you could make it next time, Sil. So nice to hear from you. All the best.
Thanks to Bert and Joyce for organising this. Everything went very well.
Hope you can make it next time, Sil. Did one of your puzzles on the way home. Very good, as always
Lovely to hear from you Sil. And thanks to everyone for making yesterday such an enjoyable day.
Great to hear from you, Sil – solved one of your puzles but I’m struggling a bit with the other.
And thanks to Bert, Joyce, Eileen and Peter for organising everything.
Lovely to meet you all yesterday, hope to do it again some time. Excellent company, excellent food, excellent venue. Might now need to do the IQs and EVs in addition to the Listener.
