Enigmatic Variations 1653 PETITIONED KING by PANDICULATOR

Extra letters in the across clues spell out a description of two consecutive moves for the title of the puzzle. This need to be applied to the king in the grid leaving empty spaces where he started from and overwriting cells as he moves. His petitioner is visible in nine cells in a straight line. If that is not enough confusion there are single words to be removed from nine down clues to indictae teh work. Sounds daunting.

To a degree it was but most clues were pretty accessible. So a medium level of difficulty.

The additional words in the down clues being WAIST, SEA, BOWER, WEATHER, SHEET, MUSHROOM, DRIFT, STREAM and ICE. Pretty random words but all can be suffixed with ANCHOR. The work being referenced being ANCHOR’S AWEIGH. A film starring Gene Kelly (visible in the grid vertically from the end of 5 down). 3 columns to the left lies JERRY.

The extra letters in the wordplay spelled  out GRAVITY DEFYING JUMP AND LANDING

This was a very enjoyable crossword to solve. It took me quite a long time to fill the grid, but the clues were excellent, and I duly collected all the letters from the Across clues so that I could read the ‘two consecutive moves’. I’m sure I have seen the name Pandiculator before, but I have forgotten where.

I identified the nine anchors for removal from the Down clues, and after finding GENE KELLY (eventually) in the grid I found Anchors Aweigh (a film title that was new to me) online. On identifying JERRY as the king in this story I managed to find his landing position, overwriting KASHA, but, annoyingly, I failed to see, in or near the top of the grid, where I could leave five blank cells.

    Thanks Pandiculator and twencelas.

I enjoyed this entertaining puzzle which was very nicely clued. And it was good fun to watch the relevant clip on YouTube. I learnt a new term: ‘in the pudding club’, excellent!

Many thanks to blogger and setter.
