Anyone planning to attend this service in Somersham on 29 August?
If so, it would make a lot of sense to share a taxi between Huntingdon and Somersham. Depending on how many people, we may get a larger vehicle.
To allow for variations in train times, and also for those who want to have lunch first, we suggest meeting beforehand in The Falcon, which is a short walk from the station: http://www.falconhuntingdon.co.uk/
We’d then get a taxi from there about 1:30–1:45.
Please let us know via this thread if you would like to share.
Jane, where can we find details of the arrangements? I might able to go, but would be driving from Cambridge (so could probably offer lifts to others in the vicinity or en route).
Hi Andrew. There will be a service in Somersham church at 2:30 on 29 August, followed by refreshments (in the Village Hall?).
Though people were supposed to notify the organiser a while ago, there will be no problem with you attending. I emailed him to check, just out of courtesy, and he says it’s fine.
John will be staying in Cambridge for a couple of nights (I wish I could, but I am very busy with work). He would definitely appreciate a lift. If you’ve got his personal email address, maybe you could get in touch with him directly; if not, let me know.
Hi Andrew. I’ve been away for a few days, with no internet access and I’ve only just seen this post.
I have indicated that I’d like to go to this and had expected to go by train to Huntingdon, with the hope of sharing taxi transport to Somersham. However, if it appears in the next few days that no one else is intending to go by that route, I could just as easily travel to Cambridge and gratefully accept a lift from you, if you’re able to go.
PS – the details were posted here: https://www.theguardian.com/crosswords/crossword-blog/2018/jul/15/old-setters-and-new-conventions
I have my tickets for a day trip from York to Huntingdon. I am very much hoping to go, unless work gets really mega-urgent, but can’t spare the time to go with John to Cambridge. John’s original plan was to get a train from Cambridge to Huntingdon and a taxi with me; but if he can get a lift directly from Cambridge, it makes sense for him to take it. So, if all goes according to plan, I will be getting a taxi anyway.
Thanks for the information, Jane. I can almost certainly make it, but will confirm in a day or so. Assuming I do go I’d be delighted to give a lift to John, Eileen or both. I don’t seem to have John’s email address – could you let me know what it is, or pass mine on to him (you should get mine from my comments, I think).
BTW (as you probably know) there are no direct trains from Cambridge to Huntingdon: you have to change at Hitchin or Peterborough, with a journey time of about 90 mins either way. It’s quicker by bus!
I have bought a train ticket to Huntingdon, arriving at 11.37 and hope to meet others there.
Contributed, and would love to be there, but it’s a day before my holiday so can’t realistically make it. But I will visit before the year’s out.
I wish I could be there and see the plaque. I managed to make a tiny donation and received the most delightful response from Stephen Graham, Araucaria’s brother.Sseeing that plaque is on my list of important things to do when/if I ever get back to the UK.
If anyone still has space who is going from Cambridge, I’d like to come. I’ll only need to get back to Huntingdon afterwards as I’ll be getting a train to London.
Daedalus – I still have room. I’m picking up my other passengers at the Granta pub on Newnham Road at 1.15 , so if you can get there it would be easy, otherwise et me know where would suit you.
Many thanks Andrew. I will be there.
