  1. Enjoyed this. Took far too long to see the obvious AMUSE. RUTH ELLIS took some easing out. The name only vaguely rang a bell. Favourites include 14d & 15d.

Minor error in blog for 26a. The anagram fodder is just MAY CLAIMS AID SHE.

    Thanks to Wanderer and Turbolegs.

  2. Thanks Hovis@1. Should have knocked the superfluous ‘S’ out when I wrote the blog. I took time with 5d most, as I was thinking that the parsing as it stands right now was a bit of a stretch, and that perhaps I was missing something.

    Regards,

    Mahesh / TL

  3. enjoyable and just the right amount of challenge for solving in a chair in the sunny garden.   I do have to ask ‘what is it with setters and Aesop/’ – there seem to have been lots of variations of the clue for 4d around lately

    Thanks to Wanderer and Turbolegs

  4. Enough thinking required to make this a satisfying solve. Some not so obvious parsing eg POTPOURRI and the unknown GHATS went in doubtfully from wordplay at the end. I was interested to read about the RUTH ELLIS case, including a connection with Mike Hawthorn, who went on to become the 1958 FI World Champion.

IMBALANCE would qualify as an @lit for me, but I’m happy to be corrected.

    Thanks to Wanderer and Turbolegs

  5. An &lit should have the whole clue as definition and the whole clue playing the cryptic construction. As such, 13a doesn’t fit as the last 3 words are just definition. I might say the whole clue works as extended wordplay though.

As for 5d, yes I parsed it as ETWEE (Spielberg film no.1) is in bETWEEn.

  6. We weren’t terribly impressed.  An easy enough solve for the most part but we thought the clue for 5dn was a bit too contrived, and the entries at 18ac and 22dn appear to be the result of the setter getting painted into a corner.  But we liked the four perimeter clues.

    Thanks, Wanderer and Turbolegs.

  7. I don’t understand what’s going on with In Between (5 down). Specifically, how is the BN container clued?

  8. @7,8. I don’t think the BN is clued, nor do I think it needs to be. The parsing as say in my last line @5 works for me. What other possible 7 letter word could have ETWEE in? The answer I think is clued perfectly well even if purists might object. It’s a bit like clues that tell you to replace an initial letter without clueing the replacement other than through the definition.

  9. Many thanks to both but the escort clue was a step too far from this distance. Having now googled it I can see how it applies to the UK but here on the other side of the world she is unknown. I did enjoy the rest of the workout though.

  10. Mystogre, I am from the other side of the world (US) and, indeed, I had never heard of Ruth Ellis. I got 5 Down but only because nothing else made sense there. As always, I enjoy these puzzles, no matter who created them. Thank you.

  11. Thanks Wanderer and Turbolegs
Quite tricky in places but helped a lot by the very gettable long perimeter clues.
Was another who struggled with the parsing of 5d and thought that it may have been referring to Barnes & Noble (B&N) – but one could get a DVD there rather than where ET could be screened. Could find no theatres that would abbreviate to BN.
Didn’t know RUTH ELLIS, but assume she is remembered the same as Ronald Ryan is here for being the last (in her case woman) to be hanged.
Finished in the NE corner with tgat troublesome IN-BETWEEN and the unknown M. BARNIER.
