  1. Pic 4 features Luke Donald, Lee Westwood and Rory McIlroy – are they UNITED in playing for Europe in the Ryder Cup?

  2. DATA was a character in one of the later series of Star Trek (that I didn’t see) – the spacecarft seem to be various designs for the Enterprise.

  3. Just begging for hints – I’ve never seen a grand piano with only two pedals – normally there’s a sostenuto pedal in the middle.

So it’s only got TWO – the CENTRAL one being the missing one – like the clarinet in the same clue (16a) which was short of one (key in that case).

But that doesn’t seem very solid.

  4. #5 shows TB being transmitted.

Olivia (Ma) Walton (12a clue surface) was “killed off” from The Waltons (TV series) by getting TB and disappearing to sanitorium.

  5. I enjoy these but am usually hopeless. However today I have an advantage. Feng shui means wind water, Pic 1.

  6. Well done HKColin.
Jolly Swagman, you’ve got the right component of the piano, but not the missing middle pedal (older pianos had only 2 pedals). You might have to consult a musician. TB is right, but a more direct link to the crossword.

  7. Getting desperate: I Googled for ‘chainsaw fish’ – there is one, but it’s not like the one pictured. Where’s Robi when you need him?

  8. ASTERISK – Piano pedal – in some musical notations squiggly Ped. means apply the sustain pedal (the RH one – or the “loud” pedal colloquially – only it ain’t) and * means release it.

  9. #6 is a CONVICT fish – I googled it but it did flash through my mind while Mr Google was working on it.

  10. Right again, JollySwagman, a CONVICT cichlid in fact, aka a zebra cichlid – and guess where those names are derived from.

  11. Could you recap what we have so far, please, scchua? It wasn’t clear somewhere which answer you were OKing.

  12. #4 The golfers are playing in the US Open.

NASSAU Country Club is a course which has hosted that contest.

  13. Sure muffin:
Pic1: FENG SHUI from Chinese for wind and water respectively.
Pic2: An ASTERISK in musical notation indicates when to lift the sustain pedal.
Pic3: DATA, an android in Star Trek.
Pic5: The TINE test is to detect tuberculosis.
    Pic6: A CONVICT cichlid.
Which leaves pic4: The answer is not connected to any particular golf event.

  14. #4 Ernie Els – Theodore Ernest Els – crossieland’s best-known golfer – even though he’s not the picture..

    So both THEO and ERNEST.

  15. @GP correct – per wiki:

The Nassau bet gets its name from the Nassau Country Club on Long Island, where the format was invented in the early 1900s by club captain John B. Coles Tappan.

  16. Right grandpuzzler.
The NASSAU is a common form of wager amongst golfers, which is actually 3 separate bets, one on the 1st nine holes, one on the 2nd nine holes and one on all 18 holes. The stakes, though, may vary, depending on how competitively serious and how seriously rich the players are.
    Thanks all for trying.

  17. Poor performance from me today, but I enjoyed trying, so thanks once more to scchua for taking the time to set the quiz.
