As summer approaches its conclusion – an offering from Nimrod to ease the transition to autumn.
Some quite tricky clues mixed with a number of more straight forward ones.
And a familiar (to me anyway) theme to boot 27ac and 9ac of 2dn 22dn written by 10ac starring 20dn 5dn. also a catch phrase from the show 24/13/18 made famous by CJ. With quite a number of clues also nudging the grey cells to remember the classic comedy. Also mentions of two of the companies associated with the show 25ac and 16dn 19dn.
Nimrod also manages to reference the following works in one way or another:
- The Two Ronnies (David Nobbs was a contributor) (see 3dn)
- Shine a Light (See 9dn – clue)
- The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin (see above)
- A Bit of a Do (11ac 8ac)
- Fairly Secret Army (24ac clue with Extremely replacing fairly)
- The Life and Times of Henry Pratt (23dn)
- Cupid’s Dart (7ac)
- Fair Dos (15dn – clue with answer)
I suspect there may be more!!!
A fitting mark of respect to the humanist David Nobbs who left this earth on the 9th August to celebrate some of the great achievements of his lifetime. 24/13/18 aptly describes the subject of the crossword’s passing.
For those unfamiliar with the theme.
And a classic he wrote for Ronnie Barker (which reminds me of ty myping)
Many thanks Nimrod for a challenging puzzle and so much thematic material.
PS. Any help parsing 14dn gratefully received.

14 dn: send offs for onE (10) daviD nobbS
I started very well on this, getting the theme almost immediately, but I hit a brick wall Saturday afternoon and just couldn’t get the last half dozen clues all week.
Including 16dn/19dn, even though the name of the company kept going through my head. Thanks for the explanations, but why in 16dn is shine=fall?
A tricky one until the penny dropped about the theme. Even then quite a few parsings I didn’t really get, so thanks for the explanations.
16 dn. I don’t see how shine = fall, either. I thought maybe 9ac was a misprint for 9dn (flash)?
As regards shine and fall – I just took as words that have the a very similar meaning when applied to light.
Very difficult with some tricky words forced by a theme I didn’t know much about.
I believe 16dn is SHUN SINE with H lowered.
Thanks to Nimrod and twencelas
Getting the them early helped considerably but there were still several parsings I couldn’t get. I could only guess at the answers to 1a and 28a and guessed wrong.
RP’s daughter Linda appears in 2d and CJ’s whoopee cushion appears in 12a by a more indecorous name. In fact the whole of 12a is a celebration of CJ’s management style.
Thanks to twencelas and Nimrod – and I can’t resist saying “great, “super”.
Jon Bob@5: Yes, that makes more sense to me for 16dn.
I don’t think it’s been mentioned yet that IOLANTHE (1 down) was Reggie Perrin’s middle name.
Never got round to going back to finishing the last few, but I think I got all the themed ones and enjoyed it – and found it tougher than the Maskarade. Must admit to having seen A BIT OF A DO from enumeration alone, which reminded me of a crossword Knut posted on the Guardian comments page on the day of the sad event…
Found this exceptionally difficult and had to cheat a couple of times to finish. Only afterwards did the links, catchphrases, come back to me (eg 24/13/18). Was unaware of a third series of RP; must chase it up.
Alternative parsings – I had 25A as G + ROT (rubbish), now not so sure. 26A is I think I DON’T* in HAVE R and 16D S[h]UN = SHINE.
Mindblowing stuff.
Thanks to Nimrod and twencelas.
This was hard.
I even more don’t get 16d now: if I couldn’t see shine=fall, I certainly can’t see sine=fall.
Eric @11
16dn is SHUN (avoid) SINE (without) with the H[eading] (heading initially) dropping three places (for a 9ac {fall}) – it’s a down clue remember – to give SUNSHINE.
