    Thanks, Turbolegs.

I always enjoy Wanderer’s puzzles and this was no exception. I found it tougher going than usual, but no less enjoyable for that.

I puzzled over CINCH: I can’t find that anywhere as an abbreviation for Commander in Chief [even on a website giving fifteen acronyms!]. I only knew C in C and I’m thinking now we have to get the H from rugby posts – I’ve seen that before in crosswords.

I think ADVANCE is a quadruple definition.

I’m not familiar with HEART OF DARKNESS – but I bet there are more references.

Many thanks to Wanderer for the challenge.

I think the container indicator in 24dn is the apostrophe s, which crops up fairly regularly.

    Eileen,

As always, thanks for shedding light where needed. I was clearly out of my depths in relating posts to H.

    Regards,
    Turbolegs

    Thanks Wanderer and Turbolegs

Always look forward to seeing this setter’s name in the banner and today’s puzzle was no exception. Optimistically tried to do it whilst watching a DVD movie last night with very limited success, but was able to finish it off this morning.

Had read HEART OF DARKNESS years ago, a rather bleak story that was used as the basis for the movie “Apocalypse Now” after re-siting it from Africa to Vietnam. I cannot see any other references to it elsewhere in the grid – but then I failed to see the nina down the side in the first place !

Couldn’t parse VOTING and forgot about the H goal posts from rugby at 3d. Lots of very good clues throughout that I was able to get to make this a really enjoyable solve. Finished in the NW corner with the tricky AACHEN, that CINCH and David LEAN the last few in.
