Server Migration – Sunday 5th March

Update: The site has now moved to its new home. Unfortunately the downtime was not minimal (~1½ hours), my apologies for that. However, the new IP appears to have propagated quickly so I hope all is well. If you encounter any problems during the next few day please let me know either via email (admin{at}fifteensquared{dot}net) or by adding a comment below.

To resolve the recent poor response time issue, the site is being moved to a new server on Sunday between 2pm and 4pm GMT. Please do not try to post a comment during this period because it might be lost. The downtime should be minimal and, if the last migration is anything to go by, the new DNS details should be propagated around the web quite quickly (though it could take up to several hours).

I have been told that the move should also rectify the other current problem of needing to manually refresh pages before they display correctly. Time will tell.

  1. All seems good at the mo for me – though there is a large gap between comment preview pane and the numerical captcha which seems new. Will let you know if there are any actual hiccups when and if they happen.

Many thanks for all the work on this and, as a server move sounds expensive, is there a FifteenSquared paypal account or the like to which I could make a small (for small read very small) donation to help with the site’s expenses?

    Hi Hoskins

Thanks for the feedback. The gap to the Captcha has increased for posts published/edited after the server move. I will get the hosting company to investigate.

Thanks for the offer regarding a contribution. There were no additional costs involved, it was all covered by the annual hosting fee.

All looks fine to me – my scheduled draft for next week’s EV seems to have survived intact…thanks for all your efforts on this…

  4. Hi Gaufrid
I’m still needing to refresh to see new posts. For example, the header for this showed 3 replies, but only one was on display (as when I’d previously looked) until I refreshed the page. This wasn’t the case until quite recently.

Do say when you need another “refreshment” of funds!

    Hi Muffin
Thanks for the feedback. The refresh problem started last Monday/Tuesday and I was assured by the hosting company that the server move would resolve it. It hasn’t. I’ve raised the issue again and am awaiting a reply.

As for “refreshment” of funds, I’ve paid the hosting costs for the site until December 2018.

  6. It’s no big deal, Gaufrid – I think I’ll survive it!

Definitely better today. I have not been using the office machine since Friday and both the homepage and the Nutmeg thread updated without a manual refresh. So it is working on that environment (Chrome/Windows 7) but I have just looked at the Androd phone and the home page on that has not updated.

    Thanks Gaufrid

… oh, but the Android phone was refreshed manually over the weekend. Will have another look later.

Actually, I suspect it is only the first refresh using the new server that is working. Just added a comment to the Rufus thread and the new comment count is not reflected on the home page.

Using Firefox/Windows 10 and still having to refresh on both the home page and the individual blogs.

  11. Thanks Gaufrid @2 – good to know it was without cost. Re the gap I mentioned yesterday, this has now gone back to normal though I’ve had to refresh to see a comment appear on the home page after posting today. I also noticed when commenting here after commenting on today’s Indy my name/mail/website details weren’t stored as they were before the move. However, when I clicked in each box to enter the details a little dropdown appeared with my name/mail/website which I then clicked rather than having to re-type (though perhaps this is something to do with my cookie settings rather than the move).

For the record, I have now seen the refresh problem on two different computers and three different browsers. On my notebook, running Windows 10, it happened with both Edge and Chrome and on my desktop PC, running 8.1, it happened with Firefox, all today. And also today, with Chrome on the notebook, I tried to refresh and got a big 508 Insufficient Resource message.

Thank you all for the feedback regarding the manual refresh issue. I have spent most of the day so far exchanging emails with the hosting company but have yet to make any progress in getting the problem resolved.

    Any parsing hints?

I see no entries for 8th or 9th march so far.

When on the home page try a manual refresh (F5 or browser icon). If that fails you may need to clear your browser’s cache.
