S&B York 2023 – Friday 27th & Saturday 28th October 2023 – IMPORTANT UPDATE

S&B York 2023 – Friday 27th & Saturday 28th October 2023 – IMPORTANT UPDATE

Hi again, everyone.

Four weeks to go! We’re now at the stage where I need to liaise with the venues about final numbers attending and eating. I would be grateful therefore if those of you who responded on the thread of my previous post would check below that I have transcribed your attendance and food details accurately. If there are errors, or your requirements have changed, please let me know on the thread below.

If your details are correct, there is no need to contact me

But I do need to know about it if you have ordered food and can no longer attend, otherwise I shall have to reimburse the venues from my own pocket (last year there were seven such cases …).

Even at this late stage, if anybody else would like to attend, you’d be made most welcome, but we have now reached the limit on pre-food orders for Saturday. If you are not listed for food below, you may of course still order from the pub menu.

Please leave your A-D details on the thread below.

A reminder about the A-D key:

A – your name as you wish it to appear along with, if different from, your real name (unless you wish not to have your real name on your badge – let me know below);

B – attending Friday’s event;

C – as B and partaking of the buffet (no charge);

D – attending Saturday’s main event at the Fox and Roman.

Between now and the event, please check this thread regularly in case any details have changed in any way.

Thanks, looking forward to welcoming you all!

John

    I must have updated the earlier thread just before you closed it, as I’m not listed above. I’ll order from the pub menu on Saturday instead no probs. Cheers.

  2. I’d love to be there but in my present domestic circumstances just can’t commit to it. But if I can get away I’ll drop in sometime on the Saturday (and make my own arranhements for food).

  3. I can confirm:
    A: Peter (Laccaria) on my own (not Sylvia/”Mrs L”)
    B: No
    C: No
    D: Yes
    E: No.

    Is there a specific timetable for Saturday – e.g. activities – or can I just turn up and leave any time? (I’m thinking: trains). I would probably be able to arrive about 11am and leave mid-afternoon. As to lunch, I’ll join the queue at the bar (I’m on a diet anyway so a sandwich will do 🙂 ).

  4. Thanks for the update, Peter.

    No specific timings, but there’s normally a steady stream of people arriving from opening time onwards.

  5. Hello John,
    I’m still uncertain whether I shall be able to attend so please count me out as far as food is concerned. If I can get there, I’ll make my own arrangements for eating. Best wishes.

  6. John before committing (I have provisionally booked a hotel in central York) is there a bus from York railway station to the venues ? I can’t quite work out exactly where they are. Regards Cedric

  7. Hi, Cedric.

    Many buses head from opposite the Station down Tadcaster Road and stop close to both Cross Keys (Friday pick-up point) and Fox & Roman. Among them: 4 (which turns off at Cross Keys) 11, 12, 13, 14.

    The 11 will take you to Bishopthorpe.

  8. John, if it’s not too late, could you remove Polly and me from the list of people having food at the Fox & Roman on Saturday.

    Cheers, Jason

  9. Bother! (he said politely). It’s been a busy time and now we’ve missed the food deadline. Anyway;

    Wickball (Dave Wichall) and Linda
    D only

    John, do you know whether they serve G-F food over the counter and, if not, would they mind if I brought my own? I can ring them if you think that’s better.

    C- No
    D- Yes, will order from the pub menu if I get hungry

  12. John I’m organising my travel arrangements for Friday. Can you please let me know the timings for Friday and Saturday. I presume the bus from York station to venue is kinda 30 minutes. Regards Cedric

  13. Reposting details for Friday evening …

    Friday 27th Events are a little different to the established routine. The evening activities will take place at Bishopthorpe Sports & Social Club (12 Main Street, Bishopthorpe YO23 2RB). This will incorporate the usual on-paper Quiz, starting at 6pm. I have arranged transportation – half-hourly from 5pm – from the car park behind the Cross Keys (our usual Friday venue; junction of Tadcaster Road and St Helen’s Road YO24 1LQ). Suppery comestibles will be provided at the Club. Transport back to Tadcaster Road will also be arranged for later.

    John

  14. With apologies for being so late, and thanks John for your email

  15. Hello John,
    Sadly I shall not be coming after all this year. Jennifer is very poorly and now in a Nursing Home for the duration. I could not take the day away without visiting her. Hopefully next year. Best wishes to you, Jane and everyone: have a great weekend.

  16. Confirming WhatsApp conversation – no Mrs B this year, but I’ll be there on Saturday, with vegetarian option in E please. Thanks, John.

  17. 7 of us (newbies) coming in total! Looking forward to it.

  18. Sorry, John, I have to cancel. I have some sort of viral infection that refuses to go away.
    I hope you all have a great weekend.

  19. In terms of payment, do you want to us to bring cash on the day(s)? If so, how much do we need to bring for Friday’s food?

    Post Covid I’ve made like the Queen and never carry cash any more!

  20. @32&35 Fi, I’m a bit stunned by the timing of your posting. Having been organising this since April, I’ve signed off on food (including special diets), badges, printing of puzzles etc.

    But we’ll do our best to accommodate you. At worst you may have to order from the pub menu on Saturday. Hope you’re ok with that?

    John

  21. Hi John,
    Apologies that my post came as a surprise, my partner Seamus had been emailing someone called Ken to let him know we’d be attending at the start of September. Perhaps that hadn’t gone through to yourself. We are more than happy to eat from the pub menu on Saturday and equally can arrange our own food for Friday night.
    Looking forward to meeting you all then!
    Best, Fi

  22. Dear Colleagues in Crosswords, Enjoy the get-together of so many great minds in one place. Wish I could join you!

  23. Same here Julie in Australia@42. . Maybe we can organise a S&B down here?
    Have fun, everyone. Look forward to the pics and puzzles.

  24. paddymelon @43… I’ll be in that if it happens. I hope I’ve contributed to this weekend anyway with one of my “specials”. All the best for the S&B gathering. Hopefully you have a great time.

  25. Sorry all. Just checked the trains. No direct trains between Wakefield and York and what is running is too pricey for me. Will save my pennies for Lincoln. Hope you all have a good time.

  26. Well, I met many S’s and B’s (besides solvers-only) for the very first time today, and I’d like to thank everyone for the warm welcome I received. A most enjoyable day and at last I can put faces to many nicknames!
    Peter.

  27. Thanks for organising, John. It was a great day. I’m not the best at mingling into groups so I didn’t meet many new people.

  28. Was great to meet so many friendly people over the weekend. We enjoyed ourselves and very much appreciate the welcome.

  29. Great weekend. Lovely to meet faces old and new, Huge thanks to John and Jane and all who helped out in so many ways.
